Gymnastics wins season opening dual meet at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. (Jan. 10) – The TWU gymnastics team opened the 2015 season winning three of the four team and individual events in a dual meet at Centenary on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers topped the host Ladies 189.750-186.875 at The Gold Dome in Shreveport, Louisiana.

TWU won the vault, bars and beam team titles while senior Courtney Cochefski captured event title on bars and senior Spencer Jones won the beam and floor event titles.

The Pioneers opened the meet on bars and counted a fall to post a 47.600.  Cochefski led the team with a 9.800 while sophomore Katie Simpson scored a 9.750 and Spencer Jones posted a 9.600.

In the second rotation on vault, TWU tallied a 47.600 led by a 9.625 from senior Kayla Jones.  Freshman Mallory Moredock scored a 9.600 in her first collegiate vault.

The Pioneers struggled in the third rotation on floor posting just 46.325.  Spencer Jones led TWU with a 9.650 while her younger sister Schyler Jones scored a 9.450 in her first collegiate meet.

TWU regrouped and scored a 48.225 in the final rotation on beam.  Four Pioneer gymnasts scored a 9.625 or better led by Spencer Jones with a 9.700.  Schyler Jones scored a 9.675 while senior Stephanie Repp posted a 9.650 and Kayla Jones finished with a 9.625.

Spencer Jones, Schyler Jones and Repp all competed as all-arounders and posted a 37.950, 37.500 and 37.750 respectively.

"This wasn't our best performance as a team but we still had some highlights," said TWU head coach Lisa Bowerman.  "We had four freshmen compete 10 of our 24 routines in their first collegiate meet.  We started with a low start value on some routines to get their feet wet.  Schyler Jones competed as an all-arounder and posted a good score.  I was very excited to see that.  We were also excited to see Kayla Jones back in the lineup.  She competed on beam for the first time in her career."

The Pioneers will return to action in 13 days when they travel to Norman, OK, to compete in a tri meet on Friday, Jan. 23.  TWU will face the host and the defending NCAA co-national champion Oklahoma and Southeast Missouri State at 7:00 p.m. in Lloyd Noble Center.
