Cochefski wins bars title in dual meet against NC State

DENTON, Texas (Jan. 25) – TWU senior Courtney Cochefski captured the bars title in the Pioneers' 2015 home opener against NC State on Sunday afternoon in Kitty Magee Arena.

The Wolfpack won the dual meet with a 196.175 while the Pioneers posted a season-high team score of 193.275.

TWU opened the meet on vault and earned a 48.175 led by senior Kayla Jones with a 9.775.  Freshman Mallory Moredock scored a 9.650 while freshman Schyler Jones finished with a 9.625.

In the second rotation on bars, five Pioneer gymnasts scored 9.700 or higher led by Cochefski with a 9.900.  Sophomore Katie Simpson scored 9.850 while senior Spencer Jones posted a 9.775, senior Stephanie Repp scored a 9.725, and Schyler Jones finished with 9.700.

For the second straight meet, the Pioneers struggled on beam as they counted two falls and scored a 47.525.  Spencer Jones led the team with a 9.850 while Schyler Jones scored a 9.800 and Repp finished with a 9.750.

TWU regrouped and finish strong on floor in the final rotation.  Three gymnasts scored a 9.775 or higher to post a 48.625 team score.  Spencer Jones again led the team with a 9.875 while Repp posted a 9.825 and Moredock finished with a 9.775.

Repp and Schyler Jones both competed in all-around and scored a 38.825 and 38.675 respectively.

"There were definitely improvements made today and we need to use them to build our confidence," said TWU head coach Lisa Bowerman.  "I am pleased with our floor line-up.  For the first time this season, they hit their routines and did their job.  Schyler, Spencer and Stephanie have been picking up the team and carrying them on their backs right now.  All three did their job, especially on beam."

The Pioneers will return to action a week from today when they host a quad meet against Centenary, San Jose State and Towson.  The meet is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, in Kitty Magee Arena. Next Sunday's competition will be the Pioneers' annual "Think Pink" meet to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Also, immediately following the meet, the TWU gymnasts and coaches will be conducting a free one-hour youth gymnastics clinic open to girls in eighth grade and below.
