Box Score DALLAS, Texas (Oct. 27) – Freshman outside hitter
Makayla Mayfield recorded a double-double to help the Pioneers to a 3-0 victory over the host Dallas Baptist in their final non-conference game of the season. TWU won, 25-23, 25-17, and 25-19, to improve its record 19-5 on the season.
Mayfield led the team with 11 kills and 11 digs to record her ninth double-double of the season. Junior
Sara Oxford also had 11 kills while posting a .478 hitting percentage. Junior
Mallory Kuechle recorded eight kills and 11 digs. Senior
Joey Redwine had 32 assists and seven kills on just 10 attempts.
The Pioneers built an early four-point lead in the first set but DBU rallied to the tie the score at 12-12. After five more ties and three lead changes, TWU captured a two-point win.
In the second set both teams traded points early. With the scored knotted at 8-8, the Pioneers used an11-3 run to take a 19-11 lead. The Pioneers split the next 12 points to capture an eight-point win.
Both teams again went back and forth in the third set. With the scored tied at 15-15, TWU used a 6-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Pioneers outscored DBU 5-3 in the final eight points to capture the game.
"We played really well and it was fun game to watch," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "DBU hasn't lost at home prior to this game and we picked up a good regional win. I am very happy with our performance today after struggling in the two wins this past weekend."
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to Kingsville, TX, on Friday, Oct. 30 to face Texas A&M-Kingsville. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center.
