TWU finishes fourth at 2015 USA Gymnastics National Championships

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Apr. 11) – The TWU gymnastics team scored a 193.775 to come in fourth in the 2015 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships team finals. Lindenwood won the team title with a 195.550 while Bridgeport finished second with a 194.675 and Seattle Pacific placed third with a 194.225.

The Pioneers opened the meet on bars and scored a 48.925 after four TWU gymnasts posted a 9.725 or higher.  Senior Courtney Cochefski led the team with a 9.875 while freshman Alyssa Kelly tied her career-high for the second straight day with a 9.800.  Senior Spencer Jones scored a 9.775 while sophomore Katie Simpson finished with a 9.750 and freshman Schyler Jones posted a 9.725.

In the second rotation, the Pioneers stumbled on beam and posted just 47.725 after counting two falls.  Kelly again posted a career-high with a 9.825 while senior Stephanie Repp finished with 9.800.

TWU moved to floor in the third rotation and scored a 48.525.  Senior Kayla Jones led the Pioneers with a 9.850 while Schyler Jones scored a 9.750.

In the final rotation on vault, the Pioneers finished with a 48.600 after three gymnasts posted a 9.725 or higher.  Freshman Madison Nettles scored a 9.825 while Schyler Jones posted a 9.800 and Simpson finished with a 9.725.

"Obviously tonight did not end the way we hoped it would end," said TWU head coach Lisa Bowerman.  "We started off really strong on bars.  It was disappointing to see the mistakes we had on beam. Those were certainly uncharacteristic miscues from that group. I am proud of the way we stayed together as a team and finished off strong in the final two events."

The 2015 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships will conclude on Sunday, Apr. 12, with the Individual Event Finals at 12:00 p.m. (CST).  Six Pioneers, Cochefski (bars), Kelly (bars and beam), Kayla Jones (floor), Spencer Jones (floor), Nettles (vault) and Repp (beam) will all compete for individual titles.

"The girls who get to compete tomorrow have a great opportunity to take some individuals titles home," Bowerman said.  "They will be on a mission to finish off strong and represent us well."
