Pioneers and Mustangs preview

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 15, 2016) – Texas Woman's University returns to TWU Soccer Field Sunday at 2 p.m. to host Midwestern State in the annual "Kick for a Cure" game and will hold a free youth clinic immediately after the contest.

About the Pioneers
TWU is looking to get back on the winning track following LSC losses at Angelo State and No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce last week. The Pioneers are also hoping for an offensive resurgence as the team went scoreless at ASU and TAMUC. Samantha Jimenez leads the conference in saves per game at 5.69 and is second in total shutouts with five. Chelsea Martin is ranked third in goals with seven and fourth in points with 14.
 
About MSU
The Mustangs recorded six of their overall wins in a streak from Sept. 9 through Sept. 30 to help bring their overall mark to 7-4-2 and have gone 4-3-0 in LSC play. MSU averages 1.15 goals per game while allowing 0.85 from their opponents.
 
History between Texas Woman's and Midwestern State
The Mustangs hold a 12-5-3 advantage over the Pioneers dating to the 2002 season. Before the Pioneers 3-1 loss at MSU on Sept. 30, TWU had taken the last three meetings that included a sweep of MSU last season. In TWU's 2-1 win on Sept. 25, 2015, against the Mustangs, Madison Purdy set a program record for quickest goal to begin a game when she scored on an assist by Natalia Diaz 46 seconds into the contest.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Sept. 30, 2016) – Two goals by 24th-ranked Midwestern State in the final 10 minutes doomed Texas Woman's University in a 3-1 loss Friday night on MSU Soccer Field.
 
On the evening, MSU (6-1-2, 3-0-0 LSC) took 12 shots compared to 11 from the Pioneers (5-4, 1-3 LSC) and tallied eight shots on goal to six from TWU. The goalkeepers from each team collected five saves apiece, however the largest discrepancy in stats was corner kicks as the Mustangs recorded eight to just one from the Pioneers.
 
Final minutes overtake Pioneers
COMMERCE, Texas (Oct. 12, 2016) – Two goals by No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce within the final six minutes sunk Texas Woman's University in a 2-0 loss Wednesday night on Lion Soccer Field.
 
The contest was a draw through 84 minutes until Vicky Back took a cross from the right side by Savannah Grasser and scored on a header. Three minutes later, Grasser was on the receiving end to poke in a goal on a cross by Jessica Coronado. Chelsea Martin's opportunity to cut into the deficit on a penalty kick sailed high in the 88th minute.
 
TWU (6-6-1, 2-5-1 LSC) took nine shots on the evening to 13 from the Lions (9-3-0, 6-1-0 LSC). TAMUC attempted two more shots on goal (7-to-5) and tried 10 corner kicks compared to three by the Pioneers. Samantha Jimenez recorded five saves for TWU.
 
Soccer recognized by NSCAA for academic achievement
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (October 6, 2016) – Texas Woman's University earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2015-16 academic year by recording an overall grade point average of 3.36.
 
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players. A total of 892 soccer teams (315 men, 577 women) from throughout the United States were recognized for their efforts.
