Pioneers and Belles preview

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 27, 2016) – Texas Woman's University enters their final home stanza of the regular season by hosting Angelo State Friday at 7 p.m. on TWU Soccer Field.

About the Pioneers
TWU sits fifth in the Lone Star Conference standings with two regular season games remaining. The top six teams advance to the conference tournament that begins Nov. 3 at the highest seed. The Pioneers are two games behind Midwestern State for the fourth spot and have two more wins than Eastern New Mexico in the sixth position.
In week two of the NCAA South Central Regional Rankings released on Wednesday, the Pioneers dropped out of the top eight teams.
 
About ASU
The Belles are coming off of a 2-0 loss at Midwestern State last Sunday. ASU leads the league in shots with 309 and averages 1.625 goals per game while allowing 0.88. Demi Tsambasis leads the LSC in shots (70), points (27) and goals (12).
 
History between Texas Woman's and Angelo State
The first game in TWU program history was versus ASU where the Belles took a 5-0 win on Aug. 30, 2002. ASU holds an all-time 14-7-1 edge over the Pioneers, and the Belles have won the past three meetings, including a 2-0 win this season over the Pioneers Oct. 9.
 
Last meeting of TWU and ASU
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Oct. 9, 2016) – Texas Woman's University mustered a season-low three shots, one of which was on goal, in a 2-0 loss to Angelo State Sunday afternoon at ASU Soccer Field.
 
ASU (8-3-1, 4-1-0 LSC) registered 23 shots, the most allowed by a TWU opponent on the season. The Belles attempted eight shots on goal to TWU's one, while ASU tallied four corner kicks to one by the Pioneers. Samantha Jimenez saved six shots for TWU.
 
Lauren Neely fired off the first shot for TWU (6-5-1, 2-4-0 LSC) but was blocked eight minutes into the contest. During the next minute, a free kick for ASU off of a handball turned into a header goal by Trenadey Scott on an assist by Kathleen Keoughan.
 
Chelsea Martin recorded the other Pioneer shots, but the first was saved by the goalkeeper and the second sailed wide of the goal. The Belles added another goal during the 79th minute off a rebound from a blocked shot.
 
TWU manages just three shots in 2-0 loss at West Texas A&M
CANYON, Texas (Oct. 23, 2016) – Texas Woman's University tied season-lows of three shots and one shot on goal in a 2-0 loss to West Texas A&M on The Pitch Sunday afternoon.
 
Gaby Larson tallied two of the shot attempts for the Pioneers (8-7-1, 4-6-0 LSC) while Hannah Schneider recorded the other and the lone shot on goal. The Lady Buffs (10-4-0, 8-2-0 LSC) totaled 15 shots with five on goal and had four corner kicks to three by TWU.
 
WT's first goal came from Kaitlin Steele on a loose ball near the right post that she poked past Samantha Jimenez during the 48th minute. Alejandra Dockery scored the final goal during the 70th minute on a rebound off of the cross bar.
 
Soccer recognized by NSCAA for academic achievement
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (October 6, 2016) – Texas Woman's University earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2015-16 academic year by recording an overall grade point average of 3.36.
 
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players. A total of 892 soccer teams (315 men, 577 women) from throughout the United States were recognized for their efforts.
