Errors trouble Pioneers in loss to Texas A&M-Commerce
COMMERCE, Texas (Sept. 20, 2016) – Game-highs of 14 kills from
Anna McGee and seven blocks by
Sara Oxford along with a season-best 11 team blocks was not enough by Texas Woman's University to overtake Texas A&M-Commerce Tuesday night at The Field House as the Pioneers dropped a four-set match to the Lions.
Ten service errors delivered by TWU (3-8, 0-3 LSC) did not help the cause, although TAMUC (6-6, 1-2 LSC) struggled with six of their own. The Pioneers struggled offensively in the four set loss (20-25, 25-21, 12-25, 19-25) with an overall hitting percentage of .051 and season-worst 31 attack errors.
The Pioneers were on the heels of the Lions the entire first set and knotted the match at 14-all on a dump by
Mary Kate Hyde. McGee reached high for a tip to keep the Pioneers close by trailing 20-18 and tied the game on points from a TAMUC attack error and kill by Oxford. The service line ultimately did TWU in as the Pioneers were tripped up by an error while the Lions tallied a pair of aces to end the set.
Back-to-back Lion errors, a block by
Briley Cole and McGee, and a McGee kill gave TWU a 14-8 lead midway through set two. Another consecutive three points extended the lead to 19-10, but TAMUC steadily played their way back into contention and pulled to within 22-20 following a bad set. A timeout was called by head coach
Jessica Beener, and McGee and Oxford responded with two kills apiece for a TWU victory.
The Lions came back with a vengeance in set three to accrue a 5-0 lead and grew the margin to 12-2 after three Pioneer attack errors. A tip by McGee ended a furious rally and cut the deficit to 15-8, but TWU was unable to tighten the game the rest of the way.
With set four tied at 11-all, a McGee kill gave the Pioneers their first lead of the set, but another TWU service error quickly took it away. A kill by Cole through a block tied things up again at 14-14, and the Pioneers took another lead on a bad set by TAMUC. The Lions then sent over five kills and an ace that dropped to the middle of the floor as part of a 6-0 run to pull ahead at 21-15 and close out TWU.
