DENTON — For the fifth time since its inception in 2014, Texas Woman's has claimed the Lone Star Conference Academic Excellence Award presented by Balfour.
"You don't receive this type of recognition without having buy-in from everyone in the department," the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance and Academic Service
Charolette Hunt said. "Our coaches made an effort, not only to recruit great students, but also to stress the importance of academic excellence."
Of the nine women's sports in the LSC, TWU recorded the top GPA in three of those sports. Earning their respective academic championship were Volleyball, posting a team GPA of 3.669, Basketball, logging a 3.530 and Soccer with a 3.471. Softball produced a 3.530 GPA which was good for a second-place finish.
"I appreciate the effort made by former TWU softball student-athlete Katie Hines in coordinating our tutor requests and assignments in a timely manner," Hunt stated. "We appreciate those students who work as tutors and our faculty who have always been extremely supportive of our program's success."
The award winners were determined by a point system, with points distributed according to finish by sport in those that the LSC sponsors after a conference-wide comparison of team GPA's. The member institution with the highest team GPA in each sport was named the sport's Academic Champion and earned five points toward the overall award. Points for each member institution were totaled by gender and then divided by that institution's number of counter programs in that gender to arrive at the comparison value.
"Most importantly," Hunt added. "Kudos to our hard-working Pioneers who continue to embody the TWU purpose: Educate a woman, empower the world."
While TWU earned the Women's Academic Excellence Award, Cameron secured the honor on the men's side.
"We are excited to recognize the outstanding academic achievement of student-athletes at both Cameron and Texas Woman's during the 2018-19 academic year," LSC Commissioner Jay Poerner said.
