TWU WELCOMES LEON MITCHELL AS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SPORTS INFORMATION

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 10, 2026) – On Thursday, the Texas Woman's Athletic Department announced the hiring of Leon Mitchell as the department's Assistant Director of Sports Information.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to join Texas Woman's University Athletics," Mitchell said. "I'm grateful to be part of the Pioneer family and look forward to working with our teams and student-athletes while helping tell their stories and support their success."

Mitchell joins the Pioneers after most recently working as the Associate Director for Media Relations at Grambling State University.

"It's great to add another Pioneer to the team, and I'm really excited to welcome Leon," said Director of Sports Information Coreyon Chester. "His experience and drive for success in this industry, along with his commitment to student-athlete success, make him a great fit here at TWU and for our mission. I'm very grateful to have Leon joining our communications team and look forward to all that we'll accomplish together!"

At Grambling State, Mitchell served as the primary contact for all of the Tigers women's athletic programs, including basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, tennis, bowling and track and field. As the primary contact for seven Division I programs, Mitchell authored press releases, game previews and recaps, feature stories, award announcements and championship content. Mitchell also coordinated and assisted in design of all digital content to better tell the story of the student-athletes, including videos, graphics and social media content. Furthermore, Mitchell managed NCAA Live Stats, game notes, interview coordination and all media requests. Mitchell also oversaw promotion for Grambling State's Day of Giving. During the 2025 season, Mitchell coordinated all coverage for the Grambling State Women's Soccer Team, who earned the SWAC Championship Title.

Through all of Mitchell's work, he prioritized the student-athlete experience and worked to elevate the coverage of every program.

Mitchell was promoted to the Associate Director for Media Relations after working for four months as the Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant at Grambling State. In this position, he served as the primary contact for women's soccer and women's basketball, authoring all articles in coverage of these teams, collaborating on digital design elements and coordinating social media posting. He also assisted with all game day operations, credentialing, photography coordination and media requests. While working as a graduate assistant, Mitchell completed his master's degree in sports administration at Grambling State.

Mitchell completed his undergraduate degree at the University of North Texas, earning a bachelor's degree in digital and print journalism in May 2024. While pursuing his degree at UNT, Mitchell worked as a Staff Writer for three years, covering athletics and campus events for the North Texas Daily. He worked to provide engaging articles covering the Mean Green teams, including game coverage and feature stories.
