PIONEERS ROLL PAST LIONS

DENTON, Texas - Monica Wood turned in a team-high 11 kills and hit .310, Bailey Wozniak added 34 assists while Sydney Stroh and Tabitha Spray turned in 15-dig performances to lead the way for the Texas Woman's University volleyball team (2-3, 2-3 Lone Star Conference) in a 3-1 win over No. 18 Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday night inside Kitty Magee Arena.

"Tonight was our best adjustment match this year," said head coach Jeff Huebner. "I'm so proud of our team for making good consistent competitive decisions. We had some awesome play off the bench from Kiya [Yeoman], Addi [Mulroney], and Yanely [Pabon]. We are thankful for the support from Pioneer Pride, who is incredible for us every night, as well as our administration and support staff for working to get us back in competition mode after a really tough week across our state."

After the Lions captured the opening set with a 25-19 victory, the Pioneers charged back with 25-19, 26-24, and 25-13 wins to close out the match.

The Lions and Pioneers were even at 5-5 through the first ten points of the match, but TAMUC scored eight of the next eleven points to take a 13-8 advantage. TWU pulled back to within two at 21-19, but the Lions closed out the set with four consecutive points to claim the opening set 25-19.

The two teams traded leads throughout set number two with TAMUC slowly building an advantage, stretching its lead to four at 16-12. However, the Pioneers went on a 12-2 run to turn a 16-12 deficit into a 24-18 advantage. The Lions held off set point once, but a kill by Kaia Saylor closed out the set and evened the match at 1-1.

Momentum stayed with the Pioneers in the early going in set three, as TWU jumped out to an 8-3 advantage. TAMUC quickly closed the gap to one, narrowing the set to 10-9 but the Pioneers scored four of five points to take a 14-10 advantage. However, the rally continued for TAMUC as they knotted the match at 16-16 and pulled ahead briefly 18-17. The two teams traded leads again, but the Pioneers edged ahead 23-22, and while TAMUC was able to tie the set at 23-23 and 24-24, back-to-back kills by Saylor and Spray closed out the third set and gave the Pioneers a 2-1 match lead.

TWU jumped out to a big lead in the fourth set, opening up a 12-4 advantage. The Pioneers never looked back, using efficient hitting coupled with untimely errors by TAMUC to claim a 25-13 win in the decisive set.

The Pioneers outhit TAMUC .224 to .154 for the match, hitting a match-best .333 in the final set - one of two sets in which the Pioneers cleared .300. TWU had seven aces to TAMUC's three, with two each coming from Spray, Wozniak, and Abbie Sprague; while outblocking the Lions 10-7, led by Yeoman and Wood with five.

Wood was the only player on either team to reach double figures in kills, while Saylor added 10 digs to go along with her eight kills on the evening.

The two teams will conclude their series with a 6 p.m. match inside Kitty Magee Arena on Wednesday, February 24.
