DENTON, Texas (Jan. 28 and 29, 2022) – Friday and Saturday marked historical days for the Texas Woman's University Artistic Swimming team.
On Friday Jan. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, TWU hosted its first competition in program history in the Pioneer Hall Pool. A two-day event, the tri-meet featured Stanford University, the University of Incarnate Word and Texas Woman's University.
"The team was so excited to host our first competition this past weekend," TWU head coach
Sara Lilly said. "I am very proud of the way the athletes represented TWU and so graciously welcomed the athletes from the visiting teams to our campus."
On Friday night and Saturday morning, TWU competed in the A and B Technical Elements.
Ashley Latchford competed in the A Elements, and
Makayla Crichton,
Regina Ramirez,
Haiden Long,
Maribella Falconer,
Laura Klein and
Anaya Kashikar competed in the B Elements portion.
Crichton was the highest finisher in the B elements for TWU with a fourth-place finish.
Latchford competed as the lone Pioneer in the solo event, finishing just .5 points shy of third place with a 74.200.
Then, Latchford joined Falconer and the two competed in the duet portion on Saturday afternoon. The pair finished sixth with a score of 70.9333.
The Pioneers had two teams showcase their talents in the trio event.
On Saturday, the historic event closed with a wonderful team performance by the Pioneers, as they scored a 70.6500.
"This was the first collegiate competition for each athlete on this team," Lilly said. "They were nervous and unsure of what to expect, but they did a fantastic job of sticking to our game plan and putting solid swims in the pool. We have some work to do and are ready to improve with each competition."
The Pioneers will travel to Ohio State University for a meet on Saturday, Feb. 5.
