NORMAN, Okla. (Feb. 6, 2022) – The Texas Woman's University gymnastics team recorded rose to new heights in Norman on Sunday afternoon against the University of Oklahoma.
TWU scored a season high 194.775 and three Pioneers recorded new career highs, but the Pioneers lost to OU—who finished with a team score of 198.050.
"I'm very proud of our team today and how we competed with confidence on all four events," TWU head coach
Lisa Bowerman said. "I am excited to see them build on this meet as we head into the next couple of weeks on the road."
The Pioneers started out strong on the uneven bars. Although they have experienced some issues with this event the past few weeks, all six Pioneers scored higher than a 9.6.
Beth Lazarus led the way for the Pioneers with a new career high 9.800 finish. Narrowly behind Lazarus,
Isabel Goyco and
Kyla Podges each scored a 9.750, which marked a new career high for Podges. TWU scored a 48.700 on the uneven bars—their second highest event score of the day.
Next, the Pioneers vaulted to their highest event score of the day, a 48.875. The vault, arguably the strongest and most consistent event for TWU, saw all six Pioneers score a 9.750 or higher.
Emerson Adams topped the Pioneer leader board with a 9.800.
Mara Johnson and
Sierra Muns both finished with a 9.775, followed by Maddie Gose and
Beth Lazarus with a 9.750.
The floor exercise was the third rotation of the meet for TWU. Goyco scored the highest score for the Pioneers, a 9.850. Johnson and Gose recorded a 9.775, and
Domi Bonzagni rounded out the top scores for TWU with a 9.750.
In their final rotation on the balance beam, the Pioneers scored a total team score of 48.400, with two Pioneers scoring above a 9.700. Gose scored a 9.725 and
Steelie King led the Pioneers with a 9.750. Adams, who went second for TWU, recorded a new career high on the floor exercise – a 9.650.
On Friday, Feb. 11 at 7:00 p.m. EST, the Pioneers will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia to compete in a Tri-Meet hosted by West Virginia, featuring WVU, TWU and University of Pittsburgh.
