COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 26, 2022) – Following their historic performances in their first season of competition, the Texas Woman's University artistic swimming team received recognition on the USA Artistic Swimming (USAAS) All-America and All-Collegiate list.
On March 25-27, 2022, TWU competed in the U.S. Collegiate Artistic Swimming Championship at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. After the conclusion of the championship, the USAAS released their All-America Team Awards and their All-Collegiate Award.
Freshman
Ashley Latchford was the lone Pioneer to be named to both lists: All-America and All-Collegiate. Latchford competed in the A-Technical, solo, duet and team competitions at the Collegiate Championship.
In the solo competition, Latchford placed fourth with a 76.5667. Then, swimming with her partner
Maribella Falconer, Latchford contributed to scoring a 75.5333 in the duet competition, which placed seventh. Latchford finished the Championship with 28 total points, which tied for 12th on the weekend.
Latchford was also honored on the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Team this season.
Four more Pioneers joined Latchford on the All-Collegiate Award list: Falconer,
Regina Ramirez,
Makayla Crichton and
Laura Klein.
Laura Klein and
Regina Ramirez also competed together in a trio, which scored a 76.1000 to place fifth at the Collegiate Championship.
Falconer, who swam the seventh place duet with Latchford, also swam a trio with Crichton, with a 75.6333 to finish sixth and tie their career-high score.
Ramirez also placed seventh in B Figures at the tournament.
In the team competition, the Pioneers swam their Lion King-themed routine, scored a career-high 77.4500, and placed fifth out of 12 teams.
After calculating all of their points across the competition, TWU finished fourth in the nation out of 13 teams.
After making history in their first season, the Pioneers will look to continue to raise the bar in their second season in 2023.
"I am so excited for Ashley to be named to the All-American Team," TWU head coach
Sara Lilly said. "I am also so proud of Laura, Bella, Ashley, Makayla and Regina for being named to the All-Collegiate Team. Their hard work this season certainly showed in their placements at the Collegiate National Championships. These ladies certainly put TWU on the map as a program to watch out for in the years to come."
