DENTON, Texas (Oct. 9, 2023) - The Texas Woman's wrestling team, recently added to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, is set to start their 2023-2024 season on Nov. 1 with a Maroon and Black Intersquad in Kitty Magee Arena to kick off their second season in program history.
After their first season that ended with TWU sending five Pioneers to the NCWWC National Championship, the team added an impressive list of new wrestlers this fall.
"Looking at this year with lots of excitement," TWU Head Coach Randi Miller said. "The women on my team have been putting in some good work this pre-season and we can't wait to compete."
The first weekend of November is a busy one for the Pioneers. Part of the squad will travel to Burnaby, British Columbia to take on Simon Fraser on a dual on Friday, Nov. 3. The next day, on Nov 4, the Pioneers in Canadian territory will wrestle in the Simon Fraser Tournament while the rest of the team will showcase their skills at the Maverick Open in Grand Junction, Colo.
Attending the Simon Fraser Tournament will be a first for the Pioneers, who did not attend this event last year.
TWU will travel to Marshall, Mo. to participate in the Missouri Valley Open on Nov. 18 and 19. Last year, this event hosted 50 programs around the nation with over 500 wrestlers from different divisions and conferences, and the team had 15 Pioneers participate in this tournament.
University of the Ozarks will be the next opponent for TWU, during a dual in Clarksville, Ark. on Nov. 28. Last year these two teams faced each other in Kitty Magee Arena, but it is now time for the Pioneers to visit the Eagles. The Pioneers hope to repeat their successful performances from last year in which they defeated the Eagles 30-13.
The first official home event for TWU will be a tri-meet on Dec. 2 at noon. Texas Woman's will host Chadron State and Schreiner in KMA.
TWU goes back on the road, and they begin their road trip with a tri-meet in Alamosa Colo., where they will face Adams State and Colorado Mesa. All events will take place on Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. for their last action before the Holidays.
To start off the new year, the Pioneers will continue their on the road matches with a dual and a tournament in Hastings, Neb. — home of Hastings College.
On Jan. 6, TWU will face the Hastings Broncos in a dual, and the next day, on Jan. 7, they will wrestle in the Hastings Tournament. Last year, the Pioneers got a win against the Broncos 28-20, and claimed seven top ten finishes at the tournament.
Texas Woman's will then travel to Oklahoma City for the first time before returning home for another tri-meet against Oklahoma City and Missouri Baptist on Jan. 13 at noon. This will also mark the first time the Pioneers wrestle against MBU.
TWU returns home to host the University of the Ozarks Eagles on Jan. 17th at 6 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
The Pioneers will also repeat opponents when they travel to Kerrville, Texas to wrestle Schreiner for the second time this season. The dual will take place on Jan. 24 at noon at the Mountaineers Event Center.
Oklahoma City will be the next stop for the Pioneers on Jan. 27 when they attend the OCU Tournament. This is the first time the Pioneers will participate at this event, as last year, they hosted OCU at home.
Before returning home again, TWU will attend the RMAC Conference Championships Tournament. The league will enter its first season of existence this season, so this will be the first time this conference tournament is being held. TWU will be the Pioneers of this historic moment for women's wrestling.
On Feb. 10, Texas Wesleyan will be visiting Denton, Texas, as TWU hosts a dual meet against the Rams.
TWU will also have the pleasure to host the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) Regionals on Feb. 24 and 25. This event was held in Grand Junction, Colorado last year, and the Pioneers had great success as they qualified five wrestlers for the National Championship.
The NCWWC Nationals will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this year on Mar. 8-10. The Pioneers hope to qualify athletes for the Championship and have a great representation at the tournament.
The last event for TWU in the 2023-24 season will be the United World Wrestling (UWW) Nationals. This event will be held from Apr. 12-14 in Spokane, Washington.
