SHREVEPORT, La. (Feb. 10, 2023) – The Texas Woman's gymnastics team won three out of four event titles on their way to a dual meet win over Centenary on Friday night in the Golden Dome.
TWU traveled to Shreveport to compete against fellow Midwest Independent Conference opponent Centenary. The Pioneers won the meet, scoring a 191.700, while the host Centenary scored a 189.525.
The Pioneers began the night on the uneven bars, where they were led by
Brooke Ferrari with a 9.675. Not far behind,
Maddie Griffith topped the TWU leaderboard with a 9.600. TWU endured some mishaps on the bars in the opening rotation to close the first rotation with a 46.0750.
Following bars, the Pioneers rotated to the vault, where they scored their highest rotation score of the night, a 48.700.
Daisy Woodring won the event title on vault to match her season-high of a 9.8250. Maddie Gose soared on vault to score a season-high 9.775. Rounding out the Pioneers' 9.7 or higher scores was
Sierra Muns with a 9.725 and
Beth Lazarus with a 9.700. Finally,
Steelie King and
Mara Johnson reentered the vault lineup, guiding the Pioneers to the high event score. King stuck with a 9.675, and Johnson hit a 9.650.
TWU continued to perform well on the floor, as they have done in their last several meets. They narrowly missed tying their score on vault for the meet, finishing on floor with a 48.675.
Alix Pierce, who has showcased strong, consistent performances for the Pioneers, won the event with a 9.8500. Woodring tumbled and hit her landings to score a 9.800. King, who had her career debut on floor in the Pioneers' last meet, continued to grow, scoring a career-high 9.700 tonight. Rounding out the competitors on floor for the Pioneers, Gose,
Kyla Podges and Johnson each scored a 9.675 on floor.
The Pioneers closed the night on the balance beam, as they balanced their way to a 48.250 to wrap up the night. Pierce ended the night strong for the Pioneers in the final two rotations, responding confidently. Pierce led the way for TWU on beam with a meet-high 9.850. Podges also finished the night with resilience, matching her career-high on beam for the third time with a 9.825 to represent the top two scores for the Pioneers.
After being on the road this week, TWU will return home on Sunday, February 19 at 2 p.m. The Pioneers will host Oklahoma in a dual meet for Alumni Weekend.
