PIONEERS RECORD SECOND STRAIGHT SWEEP IN KMA

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 8, 2024) – The Texas Woman's volleyball team recorded their second straight sweep in Kitty Magee Arena, defeating East Central on Tuesday night.

TWU (9-5, 2-2) defeated ECU (10-7, 4-1) in three straight sets. The Pioneers ended the Tigers five-game win streak and handed them their fifth three-set loss this season.

It marked TWU's third sweep of the season and second in a row.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • The Pioneers were led on offense by Erin Jones and Tori Woods, who both finished with nine kills. Jones hit a season high .500 on the night, and Woods hit .400.
  • Myracle Stockman, Kady Hansen and Malia Viernes all added seven kills.
  • Grace Reynolds led the Pioneers in assists with 23, marking her 11th match and second straight with 20 or more kills.
  • Kiana Reed also finished with double-digit assists, adding 14 in the match.
  • Viernes finished with a career high four aces. Reynolds added three aces, Woods finished with two and Luna França and Lizzy Reed both recorded one ace.
  • França led TWU with 15 digs – her ninth match with 15 or more digs.
  • Hansen led the Pioneers in blocks with four block assists.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
  • The Pioneers finished with a season high 11 aces in the match.
  • TWU recorded nine blocks and allowed ECU to finish with just three.
  • TWU hit a season high .385 in the match and held the Tigers to hitting just .177.
  • In the first set, the Pioneers limited the scoring runs of the Tigers. ECU would never score more than two points in row.
  • Early on, TWU scored four unanswered points to take a 7-2 advantage.
  • Two kills by Woods and a kill by Stockman put the Pioneers ahead by 10, 23-10.
  • A block by Cara Pool and a kill by Jones ended set one, 25-14, in favor of the Pioneers.
  • In set two, the Pioneers trailed 14-8. Then, a service error by Tigers ignited a 6-0 run for TWU and tied the set at 14.
  • After falling behind, a kill by Jones tied the match again at 18.
  • TWU faced an ECU set point, 24-23, but a kill by Stockman tied it at 24. ECU took a 25-24 advantage, but two straight kills by Jones gave TWU the lead, 26-25.
  • ECU would tie it one more time, but TWU remained locked in. With the score 26-26, a kill by Woods and a kill by Hansen ended the set in exciting fashion, 28-26, giving TWU the 2-0 match lead.
  • The way the Pioneers closed set two allowed them to keep the momentum in set three. TWU would allow ECU to score just 13 points in the third set. The Pioneers ended the set with five straight points to claim the sweep. An ace by França ended the match, 25-13.

The Pioneers are on the road for their next Lone Star Conference contest. They will meet UT Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.
