DENTON, Texas (Nov. 1, 2024) – The Texas Woman's volleyball team recorded their ninth straight win, defeating Texas A&M – Kingsville in four sets on Friday night in Kitty Magee Arena.
TWU (16-5, 9-2) dropped the first set to TAMUK (11-11, 3-8) before winning three straight sets to claim their ninth win in LSC action.
The nine wins marks the most wins in a row by the Pioneers since the 2006 season.
With nine wins in Lone Star Conference play, the Pioneers are still sit tied for fourth with Dallas Baptist in the LSC standings.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Cara Pool led the Pioneers with a season high 17 kills and hit .389 on the night. She also added six block assists and one solo block to lead protection of the net for the Pioneers. She also finished with a season high 21 points in the win.
- Malia Viernes joined Pool with double-digit kills, finishing the match with 10 kills. She also added seven digs.
- Tori Woods closed the night with nine kills, two aces, three block assists and 11 digs.
- Grace Reynolds recorded her 14th double-double of the season and sixth in row with 18 assists and 10 digs.
- Kiana Reed led the Pioneers with 23 assists on the day.
- Luna França topped the TWU leader board with 21 digs.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- The Pioneers allowed several long runs from the Javelinas in set one and fell 25-19.
- After the first set loss, TWU bounced back and responded with a strong performance in the next three sets.
- To start set two, the Pioneers scored four straight points.
- A kill by Viernes would put TWU ahead 9-3. Then, an 8-1 run, ignited by a kill from Kady Hansen gave the Pioneers a commanding 23-7 lead.
- Pool scored a kill to put TWU in a set point situation, 24-9. A monster block by Viernes and Pool ended the set in TWU's favor, 25-11, to tie the match at one set each.
- Set three went back-and-forth in scoring. After TAMUK took a 18-14 lead, the Pioneers stayed connected and limited the runs of the Javelinas.
- A tip over the net by Kiana Reed tied the set at 22. The Pioneers would only allow TAMUK to score one more point, as a kill by Myracle Stockman ignited a 3-0 run to win the set for the Pioneers, 25-23, and put TWU ahead in the match 2-1.
- Set four was a decisive set win. In the middle of the set, TWU would mount a 9-1 run to distance themselves, 19-9.
- The Pioneers closed the set and match with six straight points. A monster block by Woods and Pool ignited the final run, 20-10.
- Pool called match with a strong kill off the set from Reynolds, as TWU claimed the set four win, 25-10.
NEXT UP
The Pioneers play next on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. against Texas A&M International. TWU will also be hosting a free post-match youth clinic. Youth five-years-old to eighth grade can sign up to participate in the clinic prior to the match starting. Any youth who signs up for the clinic will receive free admission to the match.
