DENTON, Texas (Dec. 10, 2024) - The 2024 United Soccer Coaches NCAA All-Region teams have been announced, with two Pioneers recognized as All-South Central Region selections for the third time in program history as Alyssa Valdez was named on the first team and Erica Brelove to the second. This marks Brelove's second consecutive recognition, as she was among the top 24 players in the NCAA Division II South Central Region last year as well.
"AV has capped off a stellar career wearing the Maroon & White," said TWU Head Coach Babak Abouzar. "Since she stepped on campus, her work rate has been second to none and has significantly elevated our program."
"Enough cannot be said about Erica and her defensive capabilities. Ever since she's been here, our goals-against average has decreased significantly. She continues to mature, not only as a player but also as a leader off the field."
Haley Ward made history in 2018 as the first Pioneer to earn a spot on the All-South Central Regional Second Team. Brelove and senior goalkeeper Amanda Farris were also named by United Soccer Coaches to this honor following last season's historic performance by the Pioneers.
Each All-Region Team consists of twelve selected players.
"This award means so much to me, especially achieving it in my senior season, but I couldn't have done it without my team always believing in me and pushing me to be a better player and person every day," Valdez stated.
"I am grateful to be selected for an All-Region Team," Brelove said. "This achievement wouldn't be possible without the support of my teammates, coaches, and everyone who believed in me. Thank you all so much!"
Valdez and Brelove were key anchors on the defensive backline for the Pioneers, who were recognized as one of the best in the Lone Star Conference. TWU allowed just nine goals during the regular season and three in the postseason, finishing the season among the top three in goals against average and shutouts (11) in the LSC.
Senior defender Valdez was recently named to the 2024 Conference Commissioners Association All-South Central Region Team, received First Team All-LSC honors, and was selected for the All-LSC Tournament Team.
Like Valdez, Brelove has been a primary defender for TWU, often matching up against the best players on opposing teams. Her defensive skills contributed to her earning All-LSC third team honors this season. Brelove aims to focus on continued improvement to the team's defense during the offseason in preparation for the upcoming 2025 season.
