TWU SOFTBALL DOMINATES DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST UTPB AT HOME

DENTON, Texas (March 8, 2024) - The Texas Woman's softball team recorded two wins at home tonight against Texas Permian Basin for the doubleheader of the series against the Falcons.

Under the cloudy and rainy skies, the TWU (13-13, 11-6) defeated the UTPB (4-19, 1-13) 2-0 and 8-0 in Denton, Texas.

Alyssa LeBlanc (6-5) and Jaycie Hall (3-4) picked up the wins for the Pioneers as they both pitched the entire first and second game respectively.

LeBlanc went seven innings in game one and had 104 pitches. The senior from Katy, Texas struck out more than half the batters she faced. LeBlanc faced 21 batters from which 12 were strikeouts. These numbers ranked LeBlanc first in the Lone Star Conference batter strike out ranking with 92 thus far. LeBlanc only allowed three hits in seven innings.

In game two, Hall also pitched all seven innings only allowing two runs. Hall faced Yeah 17 at bats and recorded seven strikeouts.

TWU's pitchers were able to keep the total hits from UTPB at five in both games combined.

Both of the runs came early in the bottom of the first inning for the Pioneers after keeping UTPB scoreless in their first appearance at bat. Callie Bailey and Ciana Rodriguez both hit singles to the left field that allowed them to get to first and second bases. During LeBlanc's turn at bat, Bailey and Rodriguez stole second and third respectively. LeBlanc then walked and left the Pioneers with the bases full.

Hawwa Townsend, who played the first game as the designated player, doubled down the left line and recorded a double RBI as Rodriguez and Bailey scored.

The Pioneers started the scoring off in the bottom of the third inning for the second game of the afternoon.

Lauryn Davies pinch ran for Delaney Boley, and made her way around the field to third base. A single to third base and an RBI from Bailey allowed Davies to score the first run for the Pioneers in game two. The Pioneers took the 1-0 lead that would remain until the bottom of the fifth.

Six hits did it for the Pioneers to end the game in the bottom of the fifth as they scored seven runs and finished the game victorious.

RBIs from Rodriguez, Townsend, and Boley, and a couple of double RBIs from LeBlanc Makana Morton gave the 8-0 victory to the Pioneers over the Falcons, who needed only five innings to leave the Falcons on the field.

After tonight's results TWU is back on the top seven of the LSC ranking with almost half of the conference series left to play.

The Pioneers are set to play the lone game of the series against UTPB tomorrow, Saturday March 9 at noon at Dianne Baker Field.
