THE PIONEERS HANG ON TO DEFEAT THE TIGERS IN ROAD BATTLE

ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas (Sept. 21, 2024) – The Texas Woman's soccer team won their third consecutive road victory by defeating Ouachita Baptist 2-1 on Saturday. Two early goals from the Pioneers allowed them to stay ahead for most of the game and fend off the Tigers from any second half comeback chances.

TWU (4-1-0) jumped out in front of OBU (1-4-0) with two quick scores in the first fifteen minutes of play by Giselle Gutierrez and Bailee Radney for her first goal of the season. Arianna Arboleda and Celeste Beltran were credited with assists for the two Pioneer goals. Although Ouachita Baptist managed to score a goal in the 25th minute, it was not enough to equalize, and they suffered their second consecutive loss to LSC opponents.

IMPACT PLAYERS

KEY MOMENTS

  • Alyssa Striker opened up the Tiger defense early in the fourth minute by getting the Pioneers' attacking front going with a shot that was saved by the Tiger goalkeeper.

  • Giselle Gutierrez then scored for the Pioneers, making it a 1-0 game in the 11th minute with a finish off an Arianna Arboleda pass into the box, marking her second straight game with a goal.

  • In the 15th minute, Bailee Radney secured her first goal of the season and the second one of the game for the Pioneers with a strike into the back of the net, assisted by Celeste Beltran.

  • Despite a strong defensive performance by both teams in the second half, the Pioneers added eight more shots to keep the Tigers on their back heels and secure the 2-1 victory.

FROM HEAD COACH BABAK ABOUZAR

"This was a great road win to close out the non conference schedule," Head Coach Babak Abouzar said. "We did a great job of getting two early first half goals, something we haven't been able to do in our first four games. We let the foot off the gas and let Ouachita back in the game with a goal which made for an interesting second half. I feel like if we could have found that third goal it would have put the game away but credit to the team for bending, but not breaking and not allowing a second goal. We'll rest up and recover and get ready to start conference play next Saturday."

NEXT UP
The Pioneers will rest up before the start of conference play next Saturday, Sept. 28 against the San Angelo Rambelles at 1 p.m.
