Pioneers and Lady Buffs preview

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 22, 2016) - Texas Woman's University begins Lone Star Conference play by hosting West Texas A&M University Friday night at 7 p.m. at TWU Soccer Field.

TEXAS WOMAN'S (4-1-0) vs. WEST TEXAS A&M (2-2-0)
Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
TWU Soccer Field (Denton, Texas)

About the Pioneers
TWU ended its four-game winning streak with a 1-0 overtime loss to Oklahoma Baptist last Friday after compiling the best start in program history at 4-0. The loss dropped the Pioneers out of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll from the 15th spot, but the team is still receiving votes. The Pioneers have scored six goals compared to two from their opponents and have recorded three shutouts due in part to the play of goalkeeper Samantha Jimenez, the Week One Lone Star Defensive Player of the Week, who leads the conference in saves (30) and saves per games (6.00).

About WT
The Lady Buffs had a tough go in Colorado to open the season by dropping contests to Metro State and No. 23 Colorado School of Mines. WT rebounded with a win over New Mexico Highlands before two non-conference games were cancelled against Lubbock Christian and Southwestern Oklahoma State. The other Lady Buff win came last week versus Southern Nazarene. Forward Marlene van Mourik was named the Lone Star Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week after tallying two goals and an assist in the win against SNU.

History between Texas Woman's and West Texas A&M
The Lady Buffs have bested the Pioneers 14-4-1 since TWU's program inception in 2002 where WT routed the Pioneers 9-1. Last season, the teams split a pair of matches with each winning on their home field.

Last meeting amongst the Pioneers and Lady Buffs
DENTON, Texas (Oct. 26, 2015) – The TWU soccer team defeated visiting West Texas A&M, 2-1, on Senior Day at TWU Soccer Field.  With the win the Pioneers improved to 9-5-2 on the season and 4-3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

The win also tied the TWU school record for most wins in a season.  The 2008 and 2014 teams also won nine games.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first when Diaz scored her sixth goal of the season in the 11th minute.  She took a pass from sophomore Chelsea Martin at the top right corner of the box and beat the diving goalie to the left corner of the net.

The Lady Buffs responded in the 20th minute to even the score.  WT's Lucy Chalgren found a rebound in front of the net off Khadidra Debesette's shot and scored her first goal of the season.

The Pioneers regrouped at the half and scored the game-winner in the 69th minute.  Sophomore Rachel Peters scored her third goal of the season to give TWU a 2-1 lead.  She took a cross at the far post from junior Nancy Chavez and kicked the ball into the net off WT defender's legs.

The Pioneers had a slight advantage in shots, 14-12, while WTAMU had advantage in shots on goal, 7-6.  Both teams finished with five corner kicks. Morrison played all 90 minutes in the net and made six saves for the win.  Peters led the Pioneers with four shots.

Overtime goal trips up No. 15 Pioneers
DENTON, Texas (Sept. 16, 2016) – A golden goal in overtime by Oklahoma Baptist University's Abigail Hicks sunk No. 15 Texas Woman's University 1-0 to hand the Pioneers their first defeat on the season and ended a four-game win streak Friday night at TWU Soccer Field.

A free kick by OBU (2-1) in the 97th minute began a hectic play in the box as Samantha Jimenez was able to punch out a Lady Bison attempt before the ball ricocheted off of members from both teams and found its way to the feet of Hicks who tapped it in for the win.

OBU's goal is just the second allowed by the Pioneers (4-1) this season and quelled Jimenez's string of shutouts at two. Tonight's absence of TWU goals marks the first time this season the Pioneers have been shutout.

The Lady Bison totaled one more shot (14-to-13) than TWU and tallied two more shots on goal (5-to-3), while Jimenez captured four saves compared to three by OBU. Chelsea Martin attempted four shots, two of which were on goal, and Lucero Chavez was the only other Pioneer to register a shot on goal.

Hicks took her first shot at Jimenez during the 37th minute but was unsuccessful as Jimenez sprawled out to make the save with her body. On the other end of the field, Chavez took her turn at the goalkeeper but the ball bounced awry of the goal.

Jimenez made another clutch save in the 69th minute as she stretched out far enough to have the ball skim off of her hands, and TWU's final attempt in regulation was on a header shot by Chelsea Martin but was saved by OBU's goalie.

Lily Holwerda fired a try wide right two minutes into overtime, and OBU sent an attempt left two minutes later. A shot by OBU in the 96th minute nailed the corner of the posts and Jimenez got a hand on it to keep the Pioneers alive, but Hicks placed her shot in the goal less than two minutes later for the Lady Bison victory.
