DENTON, Texas - A strong performance in the opening weekend of the 2022 gymnastics season has led to the Texas Woman's University gymnastics team sweeping the Midwest Independent Conference's weekly conference awards, as
Sierra Muns was named the MIC's Newcomer of the Week,
Isabel Goyco was honored for Performance of the Week, and
Mara Johnson was named Gymnast of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
"I am extremely proud of Mara, Sierra and Isabel for their performances this past weekend and beyond thrilled that they received these awards," said head coach
Lisa Bowerman. "The best part is that we know it is just the tip of the ice burg of what these athletes are capable of, and as the season goes on I imagine there will be many more records broken and awards to come!"
Johnson, a native of Hickory, N.C., earned the first weekly honor of her career after a stellar performance at last week's Florida quad. The junior turned in a career-best 9.850 on floor to finish ninth overall. A 2021 USAG Championship qualifier in vault, Johnson narrowly missed her career high with a 9.750, tying for 14th in the event.
A native of San Antonio, Goyco wins her fourth career MIC weekly honor after opening her season with a 9.875 on floor to tie for seventh. The score was TWU's highest of the night. The senior has now scored a 9.7 or higher on floor in 21 consecutive competitions, and has scored 9.8 or higher in nine consecutive competitions.
Freshman
Sierra Muns turned in a stellar debut in her first TWU competition, as the Sicklerville, N.J. native put up a 9.800 on vault and a 9.750 on floor. These scores tied her for seventh on vault and 16th on floor.
The Pioneers will return to action on Friday, January 14, traveling to the University of Iowa for a dual meet. A 6:30 p.m. match time is scheduled.
