PIONEERS OPEN 2026 SEASON WITH A RECORD-BREAKING WIN

DENTON, Texas (Jan. 11, 2026) – The Texas Woman's gymnastics team started off the season in recording-breaking fashion on Sunday afternoon.

TWU met Pitt for their 2026 season opener in a dual meet in Kitty Magee Arena. On Sunday afternoon in front of the home crowd, the Pioneers won the meet with a 195.575, as Pitt scored a 195.325. It marked TWU's highest score in season opener and in a home opener. They broke their former record in a season opener by 1.575, and their home opener record by 0.875.

The Pioneers claimed the season opening win for the second straight season. It marked TWU's second win over Pitt in program history and first since 2016.

"I am so proud of how our team started this season off," said TWU Gymnastics Head Coach Lisa Bowerman. "It was great energy to begin the season at home in KMA. After an incredible offseason, our team was ready to showcase their hard work. Opening the season with a new record personified this team's commitment to bringing their best in every meet and displaying a high level of consistency in all moments. We look forward to continuing this season in KMA next week."

In front of the home crowd, TWU started off the afternoon on vault, where they began with history. For the first time in program history, the Pioneers had multiple competitors compete a 10.0 start value vault: Jordan Loock, Maddy Murphy and Sophia Isbell. Isbell claimed her first event title of the season with a 9.825 as the anchor for the Pioneers. Alaina Reid scored a 9.750 in the fifth spot, while Sophie Hernandez rounded out the top three scores for the Pioneers with a career high 9.700. Murphy added a 9.650 in the opening rotation, and Loock and Kyleigh Ghanbari both scored 9.600's in their first career vaults of their sophomore season.

After opening the meet with a 48.500 on vault, TWU continued to elevate their scores. On bars, the Pioneers scored a 49.075. Brooke Ferrari started off her senior season with a win, as she claimed the event title with a 9.900. In her freshman debut, Juliaunna Baker scored a 9.825. As the anchor, Caroline Bowns added a 9.800 for TWU. Reid scored a career high in the fourth spot for the Pioneers, posting a 9.775. Opening the rotation for the Pioneers and setting the tone was Bailey Bourgeois, who also added a 9.775. Kami Zarlengo opened her senior season with a 9.700 in the second spot on bars.

Then, in the third rotation, the Pioneers continued their strong performance with a 48.875 on the balance beam. As the anchor, Isbell led TWU and tied for the event title with a 9.850. Going second, Reid continued her strong day on her third event, by matching her career high with a 9.800. In her senior season debut, Ruby Goad added a 9.775. Hernandez and Bowns both rounded out the top five scores for the Pioneers with a pair of 9.725's.

The Pioneers wrapped up the meet with their highest event score of the day, a 49.125. Ghanbari tied for the event title and led the Pioneers with a 9.900. Bourgeois scored a career high in the second spot with a 9.825. Competing on her third event of the afternoon, Isbell scored her third 9.825 or higher, closing her meet with a 9.825 on floor. Hernandez anchored TWU's lineup with a 9.825. Zarlengo led off the Pioneers and set the tone in the final rotation with a 9.750.

TWU will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 16 in KMA, as they host Denver and Arizona in a Tri Meet at 7 p.m.
