DENTON, Texas (Dec. 1, 2022) - TWU Wrestling is set to host their first Tri-Dual this Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
The Pioneers will be facing familiar competition as they compete against Colorado Mesa for the second time this season and Schreiner University.
In their last tournament at the Missouri Valley Open on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19, the Pioneers were faced with an uphill battle going against some of the nation's top collegiate wrestlers. Fifteen Pioneers took to the mat and totaled 32.5 points to close out the tournament.
This weekend, the Pioneers will face Schreiner in their first dual of the night. The Mountaineers opened their season with a tri-dual split against Oklahoma City University and Jarvis Christian on Nov. 6. The Mountaineers have since competed in two duals, recording two team wins, and two tournaments, including the Falcon Invitational and the Viking Women's Open.
At the Viking Women's Open, Schreiner University's Odelia Lopez finished first in the 101 weight class, followed by Jordan Johnston with a first place finish at 155. Symphony Sampson placed second in the 170 weight class.
Following the dual against Schreiner University, the Mavericks will take to the mat against the Pioneers. In their last dual against the Mavericks on Nov. 5, the Pioneers fell to Mesa 34-14. Not all was lost, as three Pioneers recorded their first wins of the season, including Mercedes Nerios (4), Shean'areial Miller (5), and Aubrey Yauger (5).
Yauger has made a name for herself this season after defeating Jayleen Sekona of Colorado Mesa twice in one day. The Mavericks have wrestlers ranked in each weight class, except for 170.
Saturday night's tri-dual will not only be filled with exciting matches but we will also be honoring Senior Alyssa Ayala. Ayala will be competing in an exhibition match under the weight class 200 against TWU Pioneer Jaycee Portee.
