LAWTON, Okla. (Oct. 13, 2023) - The Texas Woman's volleyball team secured its fourth straight victory in a 3-0 sweep versus Cameron.
TWU (14-4, 6-1) dominated Friday night against LSC conference opponent CU (3-17, 0-7) at Aggie Gymnasium to secure its ninth sweep this season.
The Pioneers improved its all-time series record against the Aggies to 42-24, winning their previous 14 matchups.
TWU advances to 6-1 in the LSC and ties for its best start to LSC play since 2015.
"Road wins are critical in our league and our team is doing a good job of solving each match with maturity," TWU Volleyball Head Coach Jeff Huebner said. "Our pin hitters did a great job managing the ball and playing in the game plan, and Luna was terrific at keeping us in system all night. We are looking forward to playing at the fieldhouse tomorrow!"
TWU was the aggressor tonight, hitting an efficient .336 as a team. The Pioneers rank second in the LSC and 23rd in Division II in hitting percentage, averaging .258 this year. West Texas A&M is just ahead of TWU and leads the LSC with an average hitting percentage of .260.
Cara Pool had a team high 11 kills on 19 total attacks and a hitting percentage of .579 with two blocks. Pool leads the LSC in hitting percentage and ranks in the top 20 in Division II, averaging .399 on the season. Kaia Saylor, Tori Woods, and Malia Viernes finished with nine kills apiece. Saylor and Woods rank in the top 20 in the LSC in kills this season. Viernes had a season high hitting percentage of .615.
The Pioneers moved to second in the LSC and are ranked in the top 15 in Division II in assists per set after finishing with 46 as a team against the Aggies. Grace Reynolds led all Pioneers in assists with 25 and four digs. Kiana Reed finished with 17 assists and four digs as well.
Three Pioneers finished in double-digit digs with 13 for Eduarda Dutra, 12 for Luna França, and 11 for Tori Woods.
After a competitive start between the two teams, the Aggies began to seize momentum over the Pioneers as they took an early 7-4 lead. A ferocious kill by Kady Hansen sparked a 4-0 Pioneer run that allowed TWU to regain control, 8-7. TWU never trailed in the set after taking the lead, and the run led to a series of electric offensive plays to extend the lead to 19-12. A defensive stop at the net by Dutra and Pool gave the Pioneers a 25-17 opening set victory.
CU came out strong again in set two with a quick fury of scores, but the Pioneers did not let the Aggies get too comfortable as TWU went on a stellar 6-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage. The Pioneers were too much for the Aggies as the lead grew to as much as eight points, 21-13. Cameron started to turn things around late in set two with a 6-0 response, but TWU hung on as Pool's final kill of set two gave the Pioneers a 25-22 win.
The Aggies battled in the third set with their backs against the wall as they capitalized on scoring opportunities. CU saw themselves with a commanding 13-10 lead before the Pioneers went on a late run to go up 19-18 and take the momentum. TWU went on to outscore Cameron to complete the sweep and take the 25-20 victory secured by Saylor from Reynolds.
The Pioneers head to Canyon, Texas next to take on the reigning Division II National Champions, West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m.
