PIONEERS TRAVEL TO WESTERN NEW MEXICO FOR SATURDAY MATCH

SILVER CITY, N.M. (Oct. 27, 2023) – After a three match home stand, the Texas Woman's volleyball team goes on the road to play Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.

TWU (15-7, 7-4) will meet WNMU (5-17, 1-9) on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. CST.

With five matches left in the regular season, the Pioneers currently rank seventh in the Lone Star Conference. TWU is 4-2 on the road, while the Mustangs are 1-3 on their home court.

WNMU's lone LSC win came against St. Edward's in five sets on Saturday, Oct. 14. In their last match, the Mustangs fell to New Mexico Highlands on the road in four sets. WNMU will play a match tonight against Midwestern State, before meeting the Pioneers tomorrow afternoon.

TWU last played on Wednesday, Oct. 25 against Midwestern State, and defeated MSU in four sets. As Midwestern State is also the Mustangs, the Pioneers will look to go 2-0 against Mustangs this week.

ROAD TRIP WINNING WAYS
  • HISTORY: The Pioneers are 8-3 all-time against the Mustangs. They have won the last five meetings against WNMU, all of which were played in Denton, Texas. The Pioneers last traveled to Silver City, N.M. in 2018 and fell in that match in five sets. In 2022, TWU defeated WNMU in three straight sets. In the match, TWU hit .456, and Tori Woods led with 12 kills. In the final two sets, the Pioneers held WNMU to under 10 points.
  • LAST MATCH LEADERS: In their win over Midwestern State, the Pioneers had four players with double digit kills – Kaia Saylor, Kady Hansen, Malia Viernes and Cara Pool. Saylor topped the TWU leaderboard with 18 kills and hit a career high .581. Woods and Lizzy Reed both led with two aces each. In assists, Kiana Reed recorded the most in the match with 28, and Luna França led all players with 19 digs. For the Mustangs, in their last win, they were led by Jazmyne Walker with 19 kills and Maria Osorio with 15 kills. Letícia Correa set the Mustangs up for success with 41 assists, and Janey Cortez led with 19 digs. The Mustangs hit .172 in the match and recorded seven aces and four blocks.
  • KEY CATEGORIES: On average, the Pioneers hit .244, which ranks third in the LSC, and they hold their opponents to hitting .204 on the season. TWU also ranks second in assists, averaging 13.00 per set and second in kills, averaging 13.84 per set. In the LSC, the Pioneers also rank fourth in service aces with 143 on the season, averaging 1.81 per set. Finally, TWU ranks fourth in points, scoring 17.33 per set.
