DENTON, Texas (Feb. 12, 2024) - The Texas Woman's artistic swimming team took the pool by storm and dominated the dual meet 93-58 against the 2023 US Collegiate Champion, Ohio State, on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers have demonstrated to be a force to be reckoned with and have shown massive improvement from meet to meet this season. TWU dominated all four events and took the first and second place in solo, trio and team and the first and third place in the duet category.
Candela Fidalgo Garcia was our top scorer Pioneer and part of the first place winning solo and duet and the second place team.
Fidalgo increased the difficulty of her solo routine from the last time she competed it at the dual against Wheaton, and it certainly paid off. She took home the first place for the Pioneers with an 18 points lead over the second place.
Maya Schwickert finished in second place behind Fidalgo in the solo event, with an increased difficulty routine as well, for a clean sweep for the Pioneers. Fidalgo and Schwickert defeated Ohio State's soloist, Emily Armstrong, gold medalist at the 2019 Pan American Games for Canada.
Fidalgo and Regina Ramirez teamed up and swam a beautiful Spanish flamenco routine to take the first place in duet. Ada Monteys Vinardell and Julia Bernardes debuted their Moulin Rouge duet and took the third place for the Pioneers.
The Buckeye pair of Dani Molano and Gabi Molano took the second place behind Fidalgo Garcia and Ramirez.
The Fernández Montenegro-Serrano sisters, Maria and Eva, placed fourth in their duet routine and showed massive improvement from their previous performances.
In the trio event, The Pioneers placed first and second place for another TWU clean sweep. Schwickert teamed up with senior Makayla Crichton and junior Ashley Latchford to take the top spot with their "Cha-Cha" themed routine.
Anaya Kashikar, Laura Klein Paredes and Haiden Long secured the second place for the Pioneers and defeated the Ohio State trio by over ten points.
Kashikar, Klein Paredes, Long, Monteys, Maria Fernández-Montenegro Serrano and Eva Fernández-Montenegro Serrano were the top scorer team of the afternoon for the Pioneers, and Crichton, Fidalgo Garcia, Latchford, Ramirez, Schwickert along with Maribella Falconer and Kimberly Poitras placed second in the team routine.
The Pioneers gear up for an exciting weekend as they will travel to San Antonio, Texas to compete at the Mountain Pacific Athletic Conference Championship this weekend Feb. 17 and 18. Top contenders, Stanford and University of Incarnate Word will be in attendance.
