MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Jan. 5, 2025) – The Texas Woman's University wrestling team concluded their weekend at Huntingdon College, where they participated in a series of dual matches and the Red Lady Open. The Pioneers finished the weekend with a record of 1-1 in matchups on Friday, competing against Huntingdon and Presbyterian before taking part in the Red Lady Open on Saturday, Jan. 4. In the tournament, TWU achieved a season-high, with eight wrestlers placing in the top five of their respective weight classes, five of whom secured spots in the top three.

The Pioneers began the Friday duals on a high note after a gritty 25-21 victory over Huntingdon. Despite a challenging start, where they faced three consecutive match losses and fell behind 15-0, TWU rallied to win six straight matches. Gigi Donald initiated the comeback with a 5-0 victory, followed by decision wins from Chanya Tipmanee and Laisha Rios. Maegan Flaherty showcased her dominance by achieving a 10-0 technical fall, and Poorna Babu and Adriana Mauldin contributed nine additional points to push the score to 24-18 before the heavyweight match. Jaycee Portee wrapped up the matchup with a decision loss that added one point but secured the overall 25-21 win for the Pioneers.

In their second dual, the Pioneers faced another rough start, trailing 19-0 heading into the fifth match. However, consecutive decision wins by Livi Dubon, Jermariah Ferguson, Flaherty, and Babu brought TWU back into contention, narrowing the score to 23-12. Pauline Grace Heimuli added five more points for TWU, but Presbyterian managed to hold off the Pioneers with a win by fall, finishing the match at 28-17 in favor of Presbyterian.
