INDIANAPOLIS (May 16, 2025) — The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics has voted to recommend that Divisions I, II and III sponsor legislation to establish a National Collegiate STUNT Championship. If approved at the 2026 NCAA Convention, STUNT would become the 92nd official NCAA championship sport. The first championship could be held as early as spring 2027.
"What an exciting step for STUNT. We're not across the finish line yet, but we're moving in the right direction," TWU Executive Director of Athletics Sandee Mott said. "I am impressed with the growth across the nation for this dynamic sport and know the next step can only encourage those institutions who are considering adding a STUNT team or will now look more closely at it. I really had no idea what to expect when we added STUNT and I can say with absolute certainty that this sport, especially the very talented student-athletes, has exceeded my expectations."
According to the NCAA, the recommendation is contingent upon official confirmation of sponsorship and participation numbers from the Spring 2025 competition, which will be reviewed this summer. Before the Committee on Women's Athletics can recommend a sport for championship status, at least 40 schools must sponsor it at the varsity level and meet minimum competition and participant requirements.
The committee, which oversees the NCAA's Emerging Sports for Women program, also recommended that the three divisions sponsor legislation to add a National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Championship — pending similar confirmation of participation thresholds.
If approved, STUNT would become the seventh emerging sport to earn NCAA championship status, joining rowing (1996), ice hockey (2000), water polo (2000), bowling (2003), beach volleyball (2015), and wrestling (2025). Before a championship can be formally established, funding must be approved by the NCAA's appropriate financial oversight committees.
