DENTON, Texas (Dec. 2, 2023) - After a 23-23 result against Chadron State, the Texas Woman's wrestling team recorded their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season. The tie breaker came down to criteria A -greater number of victories.

TWU had the greater number of head to head victories and that gave them the edge over Chadron.

This marks the very first RMAC meet hosted by the Pioneers in the Kitty Magee Arena.

Five Pioneers won their individual bouts and contributed to the 23 total points earned by TWU. Sloane Stewart, Ploy Tipmanee, Kira Phillips, Jermariah Ferguson and Nari Miller defeated their opponents this afternoon in KMA.

A very crowd entertaining and hard fought match up between Stewart and Brianna Vollendroff in the 109 weight class ended with a 10-9 score. The freshman from Rockwall, TX. won her bout by points and earned three points for the Pioneers' total count.

In the 130 weight class, Tipmanee defeated her opponent, Shania Wear, by tech fall (12-2) in the second minute of the match up. With that tech fall, the returning sophomore added another four points for TWU.

Phillips' match up against Anikka Lee from Chadron was also a very energized one that had the Pioneers fans cheerful. Phillips defeated Lee 11-7 by decision. This match gave the Pioneers another three points to add to the final score.

Both Ferguson (143 weight class) and Miller (155 weight class) defeated their opponents by tech fall two minutes into their matches. A total of eight points were earned by these two Pioneers and gave the team a total 23 points.

Hannah Vos was the only Pioneer to receive a bye in the first dual against Chadron in the 170 class weight and added the final five team points.

The Pioneers won six out of the ten match ups of the afternoon and ultimately got the victory over the Eagles who also had a total of 23 points.

TWU immediately wrestled against Schreiner University and came close to the victory. Only one point separated the Pioneers and the Mountaineers who finished the dual 21-20.

In the second dual of the day for the Pioneers, three wrestlers claimed victories.

Two falls gave Maegan Flaherty and Faith Perez the wins in the 143 and 191 weight classes respectively.

Miller, the only wrestler to win two bouts for the Pioneers this afternoon, defeated her second opponent by decision and earned another three points for the team. Against Chadron State, Miller wrestled in the 155 weight class, then moved up a weight class to wrestled Gabrielle Phillips, Schreiner, in the 170 weight class.

Only three Pioneers besides Miller wrestled in both duals on Saturday afternoon -Adaline Soliz, Kira Phillips and Perez.

TWU's next Tri-dual will be this upcoming Thursday, Dic. 7 in Alamosa, Colo. against Adam State and Colorado Mesa. The Pioneers will return to KMA on Wednesday, Jan, 17 at 6 p.m. to take on University of Ozarks.
