DENTON, Texas (July 11, 2023) — After a historical finish in 2023, the Texas Woman's basketball team continues to add to their talented 2023-24 roster.

On Tuesday, July 11, the Pioneers announced the signing of 5'9'' guard Gionna Carr.

"From the first conversation I had with Coach Jillson, I knew TWU was the right fit for me," Carr said. "I immediately felt comfortable with making this place my second home. I really like the family feel and welcoming environment TWU has established."

Carr, from Stillwater, Minn., brings collegiate experience to the TWU squad. During her freshman year, she played for Tennessee State University, before transferring to Panola College.

"Gionna is a strong defender, which will make a huge impact on our roster," TWU Head Coach Beth Jillson said. "Her tough mentality and ability to get to the basket will elevate our offense. We are excited for her to join the Pioneer family."

At Panola, Carr started in 30 of the Fillies' 31 games. She grabbed 186 rebounds and 46 steals in her sophomore season. An offensive force and talented distributor, she dished 69 assists during the 2022-23 season and scored 285 points on the year. Also a lockdown defender, Carr finished the season with 18 blocks.

During her freshman season at Tennessee State, Carr appeared in 14 games for the Tigers. She grabbed a season-high five rebounds against Belmont.

Carr attended Stillwater High School, where she lettered in basketball all four years. At Stillwater, she was a three-time Defensive MVP and named All-Conference in 2021. She also guided her team to back-to-back state championship appearances in 2020 and 2021.

Additionally, the love of basketball runs in her family, as Carr's father, Tony Carr, still stands as the all-time leading scorer in University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire history. In the 1982 NBA Draft, her father was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Carr will join the Pioneers in 2023 and plans to major in Sports Management at TWU.
