DENTON, Texas (Jan. 24, 2023) - Despite winning four bouts, the Texas Woman's wrestling team falls short to Schreiner for the second time this season.
Today's dual in Kerrville, Texas started with four wins for the Pioneers.
After giving up five points to the Mountaineers in the 109 weight class, and forfeiting in the 101 weight class, the Pioneers took the lead 18-10 over Schreiner by winning four straight bouts.
Brooke Zejda did it for the Pioneers in the 123 weight class by defeating Ileah Brown from Schreiner by fall 4:48 seconds into the match up. The sophomore earned the first five points for TWU.
A couple of minutes later, Alexis Hanks recorded a tech fall only two minutes into the competition and won her bout with a 10-0 result not allowing her opponent to record any points in the 130 weight class.
Nine more points were earned between Kira Phillips and Poorna Babu in the 136 and 143 weight classes respectively. Phillips also took down her opponent by tech fall and Babu earned the final five points winning by fall.
Nari Miller, who has been consistent throughout the season, fell short to her opponent -A 9-7 decision that did not favor Miller. Miller still recorded one point for the overall result of the team.
The last point earned by the Pioneers came from Kylee Spearman who had a tech fall recorded against her 30 seconds before the six minutes were up. The Pioneers and the Mountaineers repeated the same result from the last time they went against each other 21-20 in favor of the Mountaineers.
Laisha Rios and Breanna Thompson wrestled as an exhibition in the 130 and 126 weight classes and won their respective bouts by falls.
The Pioneers will continue on the road and will see action at the Oklahoma tournament this Saturday, Jan. 27. TWU will return home on Sunday, Feb. 25 as they host the NCWWC Regional tournament at the Kitty Magee Arena.
