HASTINGS, Nebraska (Jan. 7, 2024) - The Texas Woman's wrestling team had a full weekend in Hastings, Neb. competing in a dual meet against Minot State and the Hastings tournament.
On Saturday, Jan. 6 the Pioneers faced Minot State and collected a total of 17 points. Sloane Stewart, Maegan Flaherty, Nari Miller and Faith Perez won their bouts against their opponents. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough and the beavers took the win with 27 points.
Stewart defeated Krystal Corona by fall one minute and 40 seconds into the match and collected five points for the Pioneers. Flaherty and Perez both won by tech falls over their rivals and finished with scores of 12-2 and 14-4 respectively.
Miller needed less than 40 seconds to take her opponent by a tech fall and win her match with a score of 10-0.
The returning sophomore from Minneapolis, Minnesota also clinged the first place in the 170 weight class the next day in the Hastings tournament. In 2023, Miller also claimed the top spot at this tournament in her first season with the Pioneers.
Brooke Zejda earned the top stop in her 123 weight class at the tournaments as well. Breanna Thompson also had a great weekend placing second in the tournament.
Kira Phillips (155 weight class), Stewart (109 weight class) and Jaycee Portee (191 weight class) all claimed third place in Hastings.
Another six Pioneers wrestled and placed in the top eight at the Hastings tournament. Valeria Acevedo-Hernandez placed fourth. McKenzie England and Mia Howell clinged the sixth place. Kylee Spearman, in the 255 weight class placed seventh, and Janney Mireles and Poorna Babu ended in eighth place.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 13 in Oklahoma City to face Oklahoma City and Missouri Baptist.
