LIVIER DUBON AND NARI MILLER QUALIFY FOR WRESTLING NATIONALS

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 26, 2024) - The Texas Woman's Wrestling team hosted the prestigious Regional Tournament where wrestlers from ten different teams came to Denton, Texas to earn their ticket to the 2024 National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship. 

Over 100 wrestlers from ten different schools competed to qualify to the NCWWC, which this year, will take place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The top four wrestlers in each weight class earned a trip to Iowa. 

Adams State, Chadron State, Colorado Mesa, Linfield University, Minor State, Pacific University, Schreiner, Simon Fraser and University of Sioux Falls attended the prestigious event on Sunday, Feb. 26. 

Two Pioneers placed fourth in the 136 and 155 weight classes and will represent TWU among the best collegiate wrestlers in the country. 

Livier Dubon wrestled four bouts to earn her spot to Nationals. In the 136 weight class, Dubon wrestled Sophie Cornwall from Linfield University and defeated her by tech fall (10-0). The freshman took on McKenna Hendrickson from University of Sioux Falls and got the win in the fourth minute of the match by fall. For the semifinal match, the Salvadorian fell against the Simon Fraser wrestler by fall. Dubon defeated her TWU teammate Jenny Mireles, who placed fifth, in the consolation semifinal game by fall. 

In the third place match, Dubon faced Hendrickson once again, but fell short and took home the fourth place - Placement that secured her a spot for Nationals. 

Nari Miller took care of business in the 155 weight class. 

After winning the first two rounds against Ayana Medina and Paige Beals from Linfield and Pacific University, Miller fell in the semifinal round against Paige Maher from Simon Fraser. Azana King, from Schreiner, took the win in the consolation semifinal over Miller. The sophomore from Minneapolis, MN. defeated Beals for the second time in the tournament in the fifth place match. 

Miller closed the Regional Championship winning the true fourth match against Celine Cooke from Colorado Mesa by decision (14-13) in what was a very intense match. 

TWU had nine Pioneers place in the top 8 at this tournament. 

Three Pioneers took fifth place and just missed the qualification to Nationals, Mia Howell in the 191 weight class, Mireles in the 136 and Jermariah Ferguson in the 143 weight class. 

Laisha Rios, Kylee Spearman and Faith Perez placed sixth in the 130, 170 and 191 weight classes respectively.

TWU took seventh in the 109 weight class with Sloan Stewart and 130 weight class with Alexis Hanks. Mia Lozano placed eight in the 116 class.

Miller and Dubon will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 8-10 to represent TWU at the National stage.
