DENTON, Texas (Sept. 8, 2025) - After a 2-0 start to the season, Texas Woman's soccer team earned Lone Star Conference recognition as Lupita Bueno was named Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

"Lupita has worked hard all spring and summer to get to where she's at today and it's paying off," TWU head coach Babak Abouzar said. "She's been a steady anchor on our backline helping us get two shutouts and Saturday she found a way to help with the game winning assist."

Sophomore defender Lupita Bueno anchored the Pioneer backline with physical play that halted multiple scoring attempts by the Tigers and Choctaws this week. She started both games, playing 154 minutes as TWU secured two 4-0 victories, allowing no goals. Bueno and the Pioneers' defense limited opponents to just eight shots in two matches and held their opponents scoreless this past week.

Bueno also contributed offensively with an assist against Mississippi College while playing a pivotal role in back-to-back shutouts to open the season. The Pioneer defense kept the Choctaws from recording a single shot, easing pressure on the goalkeeper and helping set the tone for the team's aggressive playstyle.

TWU's backline has been key in turning defense into offense and hopes to maintain their strong start as the season continues.
