DENTON, Texas –
Emerson Adams and
Kyla Podges both set new career-highs, with Adams turning in a 9.825 on vault and Podges scoring a 9.825 on beam, leading the way as the Texas Woman's University gymnastics team picked up a 191.575-186.575 win over Centenary on Sunday inside Kitty Magee Arena.
"There were some great momentum-building routines tonight," said head coach
Lisa Bowerman. "I'm looking forward to getting back in the gym this week and building off of those as we prepare for a quick turnaround in Oklahoma on Friday."
Adams' 9.825 on vault earned a first place finish, while TWU swept the top six places in the event en route to a team score of 48.800. Adams was followed by
Sierra Muns' 9.775,
Beth Lazarus and
Daisy Woodring's 9.750s, and
Madeline Gose's 9.700 as five of six Pioneers posted a 9.7 or higher in the event.
Mara Johnson and
Isabel Goyco posted matching 9.725s on bars to tie for first in the event as TWU outpaced Centenary 46.500 to 45.545, but the Pioneers were able to improve on bars behind Podges' career-high mark, which led the way. Mackenzie Kunzman finished third with a 9.750 and Gose followed in fourth with a 9.700, but Centenary held the next four spots in the event to outpace the Pioneers 47.875 to 47.650 in the event.
However, the Pioneers turned in another strong performance on floor, led by Gose's event-winning 9.825, and a second-place 9.750 from Goyco.
Alix Pierce tied for third in the event with a 9.700.
In addition to the two career-high marks, three Pioneers posted season-high marks – Johnson's 9.725 on bars, Lazarus' 9.750 on vault, and Pierce's 9.700 on floor all set season-bests for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers return to action this Friday, February 4, traveling to Norman, Oklahoma to face off against the third-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in a 6:45 p.m. matchup inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
