PIONEERS RECORD LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY SINCE 1989

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 1, 2025) – Winning big and the Texas Woman's basketball team go hand-in-hand this week, as the Pioneers recorded their largest margin of victory since 1989 in Kitty Magee Arena on Saturday.
 
During the game, the Pioneers wore pink in honor of Play4Kay and breast cancer awareness. 

TWU (21-1, 14-1) defeated Cameron (2-17, 0-15) on Saturday afternoon, 90-38 – the 52-point victory marked the Pioneers largest win since a 53-point rout, 96-43, of Austin College on Dec. 6, 1989. During the 1989 season, TWU recorded two 50-plus point victories over Austin College. The Dec. 6 contest and the season opener on Nov. 17, 1989, during which TWU defeated Austin College by 55 points, 84-29.
 
The 38 points by Cameron marked the Pioneers' best defensive performance of the season with the least amount of points allowed by TWU this season. Additionally, it stood as the lowest point total scored by Cameron on the season. The defensive effort shone by TWU, as it marked the 14th straight contest in which the Pioneers have held their opponent to 55 points or less.
 
On offense, the Pioneers scored 20 or more points in all four quarters to score their most points of the season. TWU held the Aggies to two quarter of less than 10 points, which marked the 19th and 20th times this season the Pioneers have held their opponent to under 10 points in a quarter.
 
The Saturday victory was the Pioneers 15th straight win, fifth wire-to-wire win of the season and 13th straight win at home, dating back to the 2023-24 season.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Five Pioneers finished in double digits in the win. Scout Huffman and Leila Patel both led the way with 14 points each. Huffman went 6-of-8 from the field, and Patel finished 6-of-9 from the field.
  • Jada Celsur scored a season high 13 points, Averee Kleinhans finished with 12 points and Ashley Ingram recorded 11 points. Along with her 12 points, Kleinhans dished out a season high seven assists. Ingram added 16 rebounds to her 11 points to record her eighth double-double of the season. She also dished out seven assists.
  • Hadyn Collie match her career high with six points and one block.
  • All 11 Pioneers who entered the game scored at least two points.
  • While Ingram led with 16 rebounds, Celsur and Gionna Carr both added five rebounds.
  • Four Pioneers went perfect from the free throw line – Jada Celsur (4-for-4), Scout Huffman (2-for-2), Ariyanna Hines (2-for-2) and Ahrianna Morgan (2-for-2).
 PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
  •  The Pioneers dominated the boards, grabbing a season high 50 rebounds and only allowed Cameron to secure 29 rebounds.
  • TWU dished out 22 assists, marking the fourth time this season they have recorded 20 or more assists.
  • On their way to 90 points, the Pioneers shot a season high 56.5% from the field. They also shot 36.4% from the three point line. TWU scored 56 points in the paint, and the bench contributed 42 points.
  • TWU held Cameron to shooting just 23.1% from the field and 18.8% from the three point line. They forced the Aggies to turn the ball over 16 times for 16 TWU points.
  • In the opening quarter of action, TWU started the game off with a 7-0 run They found their first double-digit lead of the day off a jumper by Patel at the five minute mark to go ahead, 13-2. After scoring at the 7:08 mark, the Pioneers would hold the Aggies at just two points for four minutes of action.
  • TWU would find their largest lead of the first quarter at 17 with a final second layup by Kleinhans to send the Pioneers into the second quarter ahead, 24-7.
  • The strong offensive energy would continue for TWU in the second quarter, as they opened the scoring with a 7-2 run. A triple by Kleinhans gave the Pioneers their first 20-point lead of the day, 29-9.
  • The Pioneers would hold the Aggies to just 12 points in the second quarter. TWU would lead by as much as 28 in the quarter multiple times. They would head into halftime with their largest lead of the day at 28, 47-19. Celsur connected on a buzzer-beating three pointer off the assist by Kleinhans to close a dominant first half of action for the home team.
  • After halftime, the Pioneers quickly pushed the lead to 30, 49-19, off an Ingram layup in the opening minute of action. A three by the Aggies at the 7:03 mark on the clock cut TWU's lead under 30, 51-22. For the remaining 6:47 of the quarter, the Pioneers would lead by 30 or more points. The largest lead of the third quarter was 38, which they hit twice – once at 1:37 off a layup by Carr and second off two made free throws by Celsur with 21 seconds remaining, 67-29.
  • With a 38-point advantage heading into the final quarter of action, TWU would allow just nine points from the Aggies, while the Pioneers responded with 23 points.
  • Kayla Glover opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a layup off the assist from Ingram to give TWU their first 40-point lead of the afternoon.
  • A layup by Kleinhans would put TWU ahead by 50, 88-38, and two free throws by Celsur would close the game, 90-38.
