ODESSA, Texas (Feb. 22, 2025) – Twenty-one straight wins.
TWU (27-1, 20-1) defeated UT Permian Basin (13-14, 11-10) on Saturday afternoon in their final road game of the regular season, 62-56. The win marked the Pioneers' 21st straight win of the season, which ties their program record for most consecutive wins.
In the win, the Pioneers held the Falcons to 56 points – their third lowest point total of the season. It marked the 20th straight game TWU has held their opponent to 56 or fewer points.
Leila Patel led TWU in the scoring with 13 points, and
Ashley Ingram recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Three teams currently have a 20-1 record in Lone Star Conference action – TWU, UT Tyler and Lubbock Christian.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Patel added three rebounds and two assists to her stat line. In addition, she went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
- Ingram also went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. She added four assists, two blocks and two steals to her performance.
- Scout Huffman finished the game with nine points, three rebounds, one steal and one block.
- On the defensive end, Averee Kleinhans grabbed three steals and six rebounds.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- In the win, TWU shot 43.8% from the field, including 30 points in the paint. The Pioneers' bench also contributed 18 points.
- TWU forced the Falcons to turn the ball over 16 times for 17 Pioneers' points. The Pioneers also turned the ball over 16 times but added 11 assists.
- On the boards, TWU narrowly won the rebounding battle, 37-32.
- The Pioneers once again locked down on defense, as they held UTPB to their lowest field goal percentage of the season, 25.5%, and second lowest three point percentage of the season, 18.5%.
- TWU started off the game with high energy, opening with an 8-0 run. Then, they cooled down a bit, as the Falcons answered with an 11-2 run. During the run, UTPB hit three triples; meanwhile, the rest of the game, they would only hit two threes, as they lost the fire from deep.
- A jumper at the 2:10 mark of the quarter by Jada Celsur tied it up at 14. Then, Kleinhans would hit a layup after grabbing a quick steal in the press to give TWU the two-point lead, 16-14.
- Free throws would close the quarter, as the Pioneers would head into the second quarter ahead by one, 17-16.
- In the second quarter, TWU maintained their strong offense – they scored 17 points and held UTPB to just seven points. It marked the 27th quarter this season the Pioneers have held their opponent to under 10 points in a quarter and seventh straight game holding their opponent to at least one quarter of less than 10 points.
- After being tied in the second quarter, 20-20, at the 7:55 mark, neither team scored for two minutes. Then, with 4:42 on the clock, Celsur connected on a layup, 22-20, which ignited a 14-0 run by TWU. The run included a triple by Patel and Ariyanna Hines.
- The Falcons would hit three free throws to end the Pioneers' run, but TWU held their double-digit lead heading into halftime, 34-23.
- In the third quarter, TWU opened the third quarter with an Ingram bucket, but then went scoreless for three minutes.
- The Pioneers struggled with fouls in the third quarter, as the Falcons went 10-of-11 from the free throw line. UTPB would come within one with 2:43 on the clock. Then, back-to-back buckets by the Pioneers, Kayla Glover and Celsur, re-extended the Pioneers' lead to five, 45-40.
- After UTPB came out with 19 points in the third to TWU's 11, the Pioneers maintained the lead, as they held the advantage by three, 45-42, heading into the final quarter of action.
- TWU returned to their 17-points in a quarter in the fourth, outscoring the Falcons, 17-14.
- Hines opened the fourth quarter with a three off the assist by Ingram, 48-42.
- With 3:55 on the clock, Huffman hit the final field goal of the game, as fouls and free throws filled the final three minutes of action. TWU went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minutes of action. The Pioneers did a great job of continuing to lock down on defense to claim the win and close their final road game of the regular season with a win, 62-56.
