PIONEERS START SEASON 1-1 AT AZUSA PACIFIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AZUSA, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2025) – The Texas Woman's volleyball started off the season 1-1 at the Azusa Pacific Tournament.

TWU (1-1) met the host Azusa Pacific and fell in three straight sets. Then, in the final game of the day, the Pioneers played in-region opponent Regis and defeated the Rangers in four sets, marking their first victory of the 2025 season.

The response on Friday night with the win sets the tone for a strong two match performance on Saturday.

IMPACT PLAYERS
GAME ONE VS. AZUSA PACIFIC
  • Sydney Garrison, in her first match with the Pioneers, led the team with 10 kills and added eight digs.
  • Miriam Williams was just shy of a double-double, closing the match with eight kills and 10 digs.
  • Kiana Reed dished out 17 assists to lead TWU, and she added 10 digs to record her first double-double of 2025.
  • Alyssa Rojo, in her first match as a Pioneer, led with 18 digs.
  • Also, in her first match in the maroon and white, Jonaida Donowa led with four block assists.
GAME TWO VS. REGIS
  • Miriam Williams followed up her strong first match with her first career double-double at TWU, adding 11 kills and 15 digs in the win – both career highs. Myracle Stockman also recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 10 kills and a career high 12 digs.
  • Kenn Jean-Louis boasted a diversified impact on the stat sheet, as she added a career high seven kills, three aces and six digs.
  • Trinity Blackwood posted a strong match for TWU in the win, recording a career high 10 kills and four total blocks.
  • Reed dished out a season high 22 assists and added seven digs.
  • Rojo topped the leaderboard in digs with 16, and Lorena Gómez also finished with double-digit digs, adding 10. Gómez and Rojo also dominated the service line – both Pioneers finished with four aces each.
KEY MOMENTS
GAME ONE VS. AZUSA PACIFIC
  • TWU fell in the first two sets by just two points, but they were unable to flip the momentum to turn the tide and get a set win.
  • They held the Cougars to their lowest hitting percentage in set one – just .176.
  • The Pioneers struggled with serve receive, as APU connected on nine service aces to TWU's three. However, TWU showed strong on the block, out blocking the Cougars 6-5.
  • An earlier 5-3 advantage by the Pioneers was quickly flipped, as APU went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 8-5. Nevertheless, TWU battled back and would post a 4-0 run to get back on top. A kill by Williams started the run, as the Pioneers went ahead 14-13.
  • The score would continue to go back-and-forth between the evenly matched teams.
  • TWU would have a chance at set point, 24-23, after back-to-back errors by APU. However, two straight points by the Cougars flipped the script, and they went ahead 25-24. A kill by Benedite Anuman tied the set at 25, but APU scored two straight to win set one.
  • In set two, the Pioneers set the tone early, a kill by Garrison followed by two blocks from Stockman would ignite a 5-0 run to give TWU the early 6-2 lead. Then, APU found a new gear and scored seven straight points to go up by three, 9-6. After those longer runs, the score would go back-and-forth with no longer than three point runs.
  • TWU found a 4-0 run late in the set to tie the score at 21. The run included a kill by Anuman, an ace by Cat Millsap, a block by Anuman and Williams and a kill by Williams.
  • After the tie at 21, TWU would come within one multiple times, but they were unable to find the equalizer, falling in set two.
  • In set three, TWU would lead once 6-4 after a kill by Jean-Louis. Then, they would find two more leads throughout the set, 10-8, and 11-10. Nevertheless, TWU gave up several long runs to APU to fall in set three and lose match one.
GAME TWO VS. REGIS
  • In the four sets against Regis, TWU held the Rangers to under .100 hitting percentage in three out of the four sets. In set three, they held Regis to hitting -.097.
  • TWU dominated the service line, recording 13 aces to the Rangers four. The Pioneers last hit double-digit aces on Oct. 8, 2024, when they recorded 11 against East Central.
  • The Pioneers set the tone early in set one, scoring seven straight points to take an early 9-5 advantage.
  • TWU would relinquish the lead 11-10, but they would never trail again in the set. A service error by Regis would bring up set point, and a kill by Kaia Lydia closed the set with a victory for the Pioneers, 25-18.
  • Set two started out with a run from Regis, as they took the early 11-6 lead. TWU stayed composed and locked in. Trailing 14-12, the Pioneers would score seven unanswered points to take the 19-14 lead. During the run, Jean-Louis and Stockman had back-to-back kills to keep extending the run.
  • Nevertheless, Regis stayed engaged. They would tie the set late 21-21. A kill by Williams would give TWU a brief one-point lead, 22-21, but TWU allowed Regis to score four unanswered points to close set two, 25-22.
  • With the match tied 1-1, TWU returned to the win column and closed the final two sets strong.
  • TWU established the tone early in set three – opening the set with a 7-0 run to lead 9-3 early.
  • The Pioneers would never trail in the set. They closed set three strong with four unanswered points, ignited by a block by Blackwood and Reed. After an ace by Gómez to bring up set point, an attack error by Regis would close the set for TWU, 25-17.
  • Set four started off with the teams trading points, until TWU broke away with five straight points to go ahead by two, 13-11.
  • A late run would be the story of set four. TWU would score six straight, which included three aces by Gómez, to take a decisive 21-15 lead. Regis answered with four straight points to bring the score to 21-19.
  • The Pioneers would once again end the game on a strong note with a 4-1 run. An attack error by Regis would bring up set point, and a kill by Stockman would end the match, 25-20.
NEXT UP

The Pioneers will play two matches on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Concordia University Irvine. They will meet Vanguard and the host CUI to close their opening weekend trip to California.
