Box Score DENVER, Colo. (Nov. 8, 2024) – The Texas Woman's basketball team claimed their third straight win on Friday afternoon.
TWU (3-0) defeated Western Colorado (0-1) in the first game of the Conference Challenge hosted by MSU Denver.
After a strong third quarter in which the Pioneers outscored the Moutaineers, 25-12, TWU claimed the double-digit win, 71-52.
The 19-point win marked the biggest margin of victory for the Pioneers this season.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Averee Kleinhans led the Pioneers with a season-high 18 points. She also grabbed a season-high five rebounds and five steals and dished out a season-high two assists. On her way to 18 points, Kleinhans went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. On the season, Kleinhans is 15-15 from the charity stripe.
- Ashley Ingram added 11 points and four rebounds on 5-of-11 from the floor.
- Leila Patel hit a season-high two three pointers and finished the afternoon with 10 points. She also recorded a season-high three assists.
- Scout Huffman also scored in double digits, finishing the game with 10 points. Huffman went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
- Jada Celsur also went perfect from the charity stripe, going 2-for-2 on the day.
- Gionna Carr added a season-high eight points in the win on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.
- All nine Pioneers who entered the game recorded a point.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- The Pioneers once again dominated the paint, scoring 34 points in the paint to the Mountaineers' 20. Additionally, the bench made a big difference in today's game, as TWU's bench totaled 29 points.
- TWU shot 44.6% from the field, 27.8% from the three and a season-high 88.9% from the free throw line. On the other side, the Mountaineers shot 40% from the field and from the three point line.
- The score was tied twice, but TWU never trailed throughout the entirety of the 40 minutes of action.
- TWU forced WCU to turn the ball over 18 times, and the Pioneers scored 14 points off those turnovers. The Pioneers turned the ball over 13 times, but only allowed the Mountaineers to score six points off those turnovers, as TWU recovered and defended well.
- It marked TWU's second game of the season with double-digit assists, 13, and third straight game with 10 steals.
- The Pioneers opened the game strong, outscoring the Mountaineers 21-11 in the opening quarter. In the second quarter, TWU struggled to find their offensive momentum, scoring just 10 points to WCU's 16. The Pioneers locked in and came out of halftime ready. TWU scored their most points in a quarter this season, 25, and held WCU to just 12. The Pioneers closed the fourth quarter strong with 15 points to seal the 19-point win.
- In the opening quarter, the Pioneers struck first with a quick layup by Ingram.
- In the final 13 seconds of the quarter, Celsur would give TWU their largest lead of the first quarter at 10 with a quick layup, 21-11.
- A three minute scoring drive late in the second quarter for TWU allowed WCU to cut the lead to five, 29-24.
- Kleinhans pushed the lead back up to seven with a layup off a steal at the 1:28 mark, but TWU was unable to scoring in the waning minutes of the first half.
- After a three in the final 30 seconds, TWU took a four-point advantage into the break, 31-27.
- The third quarter was all TWU, as the Pioneers held the Mountaineers scoreless until the 6:39 mark of the quarter.
- TWU would continue to maintain the double-digit lead throughout the third quarter. Four back-to-back made free throws by Kleinhans gave the Pioneers their largest lead to that point at 17, 56-39.
- TWU connected on three three pointers in the final quarter of action. Two long-range shots came from Gionna Carr late in the game. Her second three broke three minutes of scoreless action between the two teams to increase TWU's lead to 19, 69-50.
- A layup by Ariyanna Hines at the 30-second mark would give TWU their largest lead of the game at 21.
- Two made free throws by the Moutaineers would end the game with TWU taking home the 19-point win, 71-52.
