DENTON, Texas (Jan. 13, 2025) – Behind another strong defensive effort, the Texas Woman's Pioneers recorded their 15th win of the season and their sixth win at home on Saturday, Jan. 11, defeating St. Edward's 59-50.
TWU (15-1, 8-1) held SEU (6-11, 2-6) scoreless for the first 13 minutes of action, marking the 13th time this season the Pioneers have held a team under 10 points in a quarter. Additionally, it was the first time since Dec. 2, 2021 against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith that the Pioneers have held a team scoreless in a quarter.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Scout Huffman led the way for the Pioneers with a season high 22 points on 8-of-12 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the three point line and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Huffman is currently shooting 56.9% from the field, which ranks first in the Lone Star Conference. She is also shooting 100% from the free throw line on the season, 19-of-19. Huffman also added six rebounds, one block and one steal to her stat line.
- Ashley Ingram joined Huffman in double-digits with 18 points. She also shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Ingram added a career high 17 rebounds. She also dished out five assists and grabbed two steals. With her two steals, she reached 128 steals, which ties No. 10 all-time in steals in TWU program history. Ingram becomes the only player in program history to rank in the Top 10 all-time in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.
- On the defensive end, Kayla Glover grabbed a career high five steals in the win.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- In the win, the Pioneers forced the Hilltoppers' to turn the ball over 18 times and score 20 points of their turnovers.
- The win marked the Pioneers' second wire-to-wire win of the season.
- TWU shot 47.6% from the field in the win and scored 30 points in the paint
- Despite committing 25 turnovers, TWU did a great job on defense and only allowed SEU to score 12 points off the turnovers.
- The Pioneers controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Hilltoppers 34-26.
- In the first quarter, TWU started with lights out defense, scoring 10 points and allowing SEU zero points on 13 attempts. Ingram hit a buzzer beater layup to close the first quarter off the assist from Jada Celsur after an SEU turnover to close the quarter in favor of the Pioneers, 10-0.
- Huffman continued the scoring for the Pioneers to open the second quarter with a triple off the assist from Ingram.
- SEU would score their first bucket of the game at the 7:41 mark of the second quarter, 13-2.
- Behind eight points from Ingram, seven points from Huffman and free throws by Celsur and Ariyanna Hines, the Pioneers scored their most points of any quarter in the second, as they finished with 19 points in the second quarter of action to go into halftime ahead by 13, 29-16.
- After two quick buckets by SEU to open the third quarter, Jada Celsur ignited a 10-0 run across five minutes of action.
- Gabby Elliott closed the third quarter with a made free-throw to send TWU into the final quarter of action ahead by 11, 43-32.
- SEU would come within six in the fourth quarter,46-40, but TWU would quickly push it back to a double-digit lead, 50-40, after layups by Leila Patel and Huffman.
- In the game, TWU did a good job of getting to the free throw line, as they shot 20 free throws on the day. Four made free throws – two each from Ingram and Patel - would put the exclamation point on the win, 59-50.
