LAREDO, Texas (Jan. 18, 2025) – The Texas Woman's basketball team recorded their fourth and second straight wire-to-wire win of the season, defeating Texas A&M International 68-48 on Saturday afternoon.
TWU (17-1, 10-1) held TAMIU (3-14, 2-9) to just 48 points, marking the 10th time this season and second straight time the Pioneers have held their opponent under 50 points in a game.
The Pioneers also recorded 20 assists – their second most of the season – and just eight turnovers – their lowest of the season.
It marked the sixth straight win for the Pioneers over TAMIU, and their 13th double-digit win of the season – fourth win by 20 or more points.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Ashley Ingram led the way for the Pioneers with another 17-point performance. She went 5-for-9 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. It marked the fourth straight perfect free throw game for Ingram. She also added five rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals in the win.
- With 319 assists and 132 steals on her career, Ingram moved into fourth all-time in assists and tied for ninth in steals.
- Scout Huffman joined Ingram in double-digits with 16 points, marking her fifth straight game with double-digits. She went 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. She also grabbed a season high seven rebounds in the win.
- Huffman is currently averaging 58.4% from the field, which ranks first in the Lone Star Conference. She is also shooting 100% from the free throw line, 23-for-23.
- Kayla Glover dished out a season high four assists in the win, and Leila Patel also led the way with four assists.
- Averee Kleinhans and Gabby Elliott both finished with eight points and four rebounds.
- Kleinhans went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- The Pioneers' bench made a huge impact, scoring 29 points.
- TWU had another strong defensive performance, forcing TAMIU to turn the ball over 17 times for 23 TWU points. The Pioneers also won every quarter of action with their most points scored, 20, coming in fourth quarter.
- To open the game, TWU went on a 7-0 run, not allowing TAMIU to score a bucket until the 5:45 mark in the first quarter. After leading by seven to early-on, the Pioneers once again found their largest lead of the first quarter at seven again to close the quarter off a made layup by Elliot after she grabbed the offensive rebound and got the put-back.
- TWU opened the second quarter leading, 17-10.
- The Pioneers got off to a slow start in the second quarter – not finding their first bucket of the quarter until 7:13 mark, after Ingram connected on two free throws.
- In the lowest scoring quarter of the game for the Pioneers, TWU found their first double-digit lead of the night, 28-17, with 1:21 remaining in the quarter off a triple by Jada Celsur from the assist from Ingram. The Dustdevils answered with a three pointer of their own to cut it back to eight points, 28-20. Each team would score one more bucket before the end of the first half. A bucket by Caroline Glud Rasmussen of the assist by Kleinhans would close the half for TWU, as the Pioneers entered halftime ahead by eight points, 30-22.
- In the second half alone, the Pioneers outscored the Dustdevils, 38-26.
- TWU would hold TAMIU to just 10 points in the third quarter, as the Pioneers' defense locked down and forced the Dustdevils into long scoring droughts.
- Celsur gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the quarter at 18 with 1:05 left in the third, after the Pioneers' pressed full-court and a trap by Gionna Carr and Celsur forced the turnover. Carr dished it to Celsur for the layup, as they Pioneers went ahead by 18, 48-30.
- A bucket in the final seconds of the third from TAMIU would give TWU a 16-point advantage, 48-32, heading into the final quarter of action.
- The Pioneers continued to grow their lead in the fourth, as they scored 20 points in the final quarter of action.
- TWU balanced their explosive offense with stifling defense in the fourth. They held TAMIU scoreless for the final two minutes of action, and TWU would score six straight. The Pioneers largest lead of the night came from a layup by Celsur off the assist from Ahrianna Morgan to give TWU the 21-point lead, 68-47. TAMIU would connect on one more free throw to close the game.
- The Pioneers claimed the 20-point win, 68-48, holding their opponent to just 48 points for the second straight game.
