SAN ANGELO, Texas (Feb. 20, 2025) – For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the Texas Woman's basketball claimed the win against Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas.
TWU (26-1, 19-1) won their 20th straight game, defeating ASU (16-10, 12-8) 69-51. It also marked the Pioneers' 19th straight game holding their opponent to 55 or less points.
In the win, the Pioneers held the Rambelles to their lowest point total of the season and lowest field goal percentage of the season, 27.7%.
History was also made on Thursday night, as
Ashley Ingram claimed her 983rd rebound and officially became into No. 1 in rebounds in TWU program history. Ingram passed Peggy Allen McCoy to claim the No. 1 spot. She now ranks first in points and rebounds.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Ingram led the way for the Pioneers with 17 points and eight rebounds. She also added five assists and two steals.
- Scout Huffman and Leila Patel joined her in double digits, as both finished with 16 points. Huffman added five rebounds, one assist and one steal in the win. Additionally, Huffman went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to improve to 33-of-33 from the charity stripe on the season. Patel shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the three point line and an impressive, 6-of-7 overall from the field.
- Averee Kleinhans also shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the win. She finished with eight points and five boards.
- Gabby Elliott dominated the offensive glass in the win, finishing the game with eight overall rebounds and six offensive rebounds.
- Ariyanna Hines went a perfect 2-for-2 from the three point line in the win.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- The Pioneers won the rebounding battle 42-39.
- TWU shot 46.6% from the field and 38.5% from the three point line. The Pioneers scored 42 points in the paint. Furthermore, the Pioneers forced the Rambelles to turn the ball over 16 times for 12 TWU points. While TWU committed 15 turnovers, their lockdown defense held strong, as they only allowed ASU to score just three points off those turnovers.
- In the opening quarter of action, the Rambelles outscored the Pioneers, 17-11. ASU opened the game on a 5-1 run. At the 4:24 mark of the first quarter, Ingram hit a layup to bring the Pioneers within one, 8-7. ASU would close the first quarter on a 6-2 run, as the Pioneers entered the second quarter trailing by six, 17-11.
- The second quarter proved to be the turning point. The Pioneers stormed out and scored 21 points and held the Rambelles to just nine points in the quarter. It marks TWU's 26th quarter holding their opponent to under 10 points and sixth straight game holding their opponent to at least one quarter of less than 10 points.
- TWU held ASU without a basket until the five minute mark of the second quarter. Back-to-back buckets by Ingram would open the quarter. Then, back-to-back buckets by Patel would tie it up twice halfway through the second quarter.
- At the 3:32 mark of the second quarter, two made free throws by Kleinhans would give TWU their first lead of the night, 25-24.
- Despite one good layup by ASU, Huffman and Jada Celsur would score two quick baskets to put TWU ahead by three, 29-26 with 1:19 left in the half. Then, with time winding down, the Pioneers rotated the ball on offense, and Patel took a late open three and drilled it at the buzzer to give TWU their largest lead of the day in the first half, 32-26.
- The momentum would continue to drive the Pioneers in the third quarter. They followed up their strong second quarter with 21 points in third.
- Hines connected on a triple to open the quarter to increase TWU's lead to nine, 35-26. Then, at the 5:46 mark, Hines hit her second three of the night to give the Pioneers their first double-digit lead of the night at 12, 44-32.
- The threes continued to rain in the third quarter, as a triple from Patel put TWU ahead by 17 – their largest lead of the third quarter – 49-32.
- Kleinhans would close the quarter with two made free throws to send TWU into the fourth quarter ahead by 14, 53-39.
- In the fourth and final quarter of the night, the Pioneers would maintain their double-digit lead. With 2:50 on the clock, Huffman hit a layup and put TWU ahead by 20, 65-45 – their first 20-point advantage of the night. Just 20 seconds later, Huffman would hit two free throws, which gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the night at 22, 67-45.
- Three offense rebounds by Elliott in the final 20 seconds of action would seal the win for TWU, 69-51. It marked the Pioneers' 20th double-digit win of the season.
