In 1967, during the height of the women’s collegiate athletics forming across the country, TWU President Dr. John Guinn asked Head Coach Dr. Bert Lyle to consider starting a track team. The team was formed, and the very first collegiate track and field women’s championships were held in San Marcos, Texas on May 8-9, 1969, sponsored by the Division of Girls and Women’s Sports. The Texas Woman’s team scored 74 points and secured first place over Texas Tech and Indiana State. TWU celebrated 13 event placers in individual events and had three relay teams score points. They became the first TWU team to win a national championship.
