SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 8, 2025) – Behind another strong defensive effort, the Texas Woman's basketball team claimed their 17th straight win and 23rd win of the season.
On Saturday afternoon, TWU (23-1, 16-1) held the Rattlers to just 45 points in their 58-45 victory. It marked the 16th straight game the Pioneers have held their opponents to 55 or less points.
TWU currently ranks first in the Lone Star Conference and fifth in Division II in defense, holding their opponents to an average of 50.2 points per game.
Ashley Ingram led the way for the Pioneers in the win with her 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Ingram added four assists, one block and one steal to her double-double stat line. On her career, Ingram is currently tied for eighth in steals with 137.
- Scout Huffman and Gabby Elliott joined Ingram in double digits, as Huffman added 14 points and Elliott finished with 12. Elliott finished with seven rebounds, while Huffman grabbed two on the night. Both Pioneers finished with one block, and Huffman also grabbed one steal.
- Jada Celsur finished with nine points and two steals in the win.
- The Pioneers finished with 18 total team assists. Averee Kleinhans led the way with six on the afternoon, and Kayla Glover matched her career high with five assists. Kleinhans also added four rebounds to her stat line.
- Three Pioneers went perfect from the charity stripe in the win – Huffman, Glover and Celsur all went 2-for-2 on the day.
PIONEER POWER MOMENTS
- TWU forced the Rattlers to turn the ball over 19 times for 24 TWU points. The Pioneers' bench contributed 25 points in the win, and TWU dominated the points in the paint, 38-18.
- The Pioneers only gave up nine turnovers. They shot 37.3% from the field and struggled from the three point line, going 1-14. The Pioneers held the Rattlers to shooting 31.9% from the field and 22.7% from beyond the arc.
- In the opening quarter, the score was tied three times. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm to start. Elliott broke a TWU scoring drought to tie the game at eight each with a jumper off the assist by Glover with 3:55 left in the first. Then, she connected again just 39 seconds letter to put TWU ahead, 10-8.
- Ingram would close the quarter with a made layup off the assist by Kleinhans to send TWU into the second quarter ahead by two, 12-10.
- The second quarter proved to be the difference maker in the game, as the Pioneers outscored the Rattlers 21-5. It marked the 22nd quarter this season TWU has held their opponent to less than 10 points in a quarter. Additionally, it marks the fifth straight game TWU had held their opponent to less than 10 points in at least one quarter.
- A triple by Celsur opened the strong quarter for the Pioneers to increase their lead to five, 15-10. Then, a tip-in by Elliott have TWU their first double-digit lead of the afternoon, 21-11.
- TWU would lockdown on defense and hold the Rattlers scoreless for six minutes of action in the second quarter. The Pioneers would lead by as much as 20 points in the quarter, which came after two made Celsur free throws at the 2:20 mark.
- TWU would head into halftime with an 18-point advantage, 33-15.
- The Pioneers would maintain their double-digit lead throughout the entirety of the third quarter, leading by as much as 22 – which came at the 8:37 mark off a second chance bucket by Huffman with the dish from Ariyanna Hines.
- TWU would head into the final quarter of action ahead by 19, 50-31.
- In the final 10 minutes, the Pioneers held strong on defense to maintain their lead. Huffman scored the final basket of the day for TWU off an assist by Caroline Glud Rasmussen, as the Pioneers claimed the win 58-45.
